Abstract
How we define success in our lives and our careers deeply affects our professional development and wellbeing. Too often, we leave this important task to others, either through social media, our preconceptions of what a “good physicist” is, or the beliefs of our employers and supervisors. In this talk, I aim to share the good, the bad, and the ugly of my journey as an academic medical physicist and the lessons learned along the way: the importance of accurate professional comparison, identifying whether your employment is in alignment with your goals, defining success individually and unconstrained by the medical physics box, and lastly, creating coherent momentum toward our personal definition of success. “Success” is not a monolith; it requires individuality, adaptability and, at times, a hearty sense of humor.
