Visiting Opportunities

Visiting Faculty, Instructors, and Scholars

The Stanford School of Medicine offers a range of visiting appointments of at least four weeks. This opportunity is ideal for individuals from different backgrounds who come to Stanford campus for short term stays to learn, do research, and teach. These appointments are unpaid, as it is expected that the visitor’s home institution continues their pay.  For more information, please visit the subpage on the Office of Academic Affairs website and/or contact Cedra Wright at cedra@stanford.edu

Visiting Observers

Stanford Health Care (SHC) permits approved individuals to be present in hospitals and clinics to observe patient care activities. The Division of Medical Psychiatry offers potential Visiting Observerships but availability is dependent on scheduling of other rotators on service. This activity is appropriate for medical students, medical residents, or visiting physicians.

Please note eligibility criteria related to Visiting Observers (VO):

  1. Visiting Observers are not permitted to participate in any patient care activities.
  2. Hosts are responsible for supervising Visiting Observers at all times.
  3. Visiting Observers are not allowed to take any videos, photography, or audio recordings or post images to social media of any activities they observe during their visit.
  4. Visiting Observers may only observe for 30 consecutive calendar days or less in a given 12-month period. In other words, only one 30-day block of time is permitted per 12-month period and cannot be split up.
  5. Workforce Health and Wellness clearance is required.
  6. Electronic medical record (EMR) access is not permitted.

Visiting Residents

The Division of Medical Psychiatry does offer resident physician elective experiences with the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry team at select times throughout the year. Availability is dependent on scheduling (we prioritize having an optimal learning environment for Stanford trainees in psychiatry on our services):

Please note eligibility criteria related to Visiting Residents (VR):

  • Must be in their second post-graduate year (PGY2) by the potential start date of the rotation
  • US/Canadian Medical Graduates
  • International Medical School Graduates who are currently enrolled in an ACGME program in the US.
  • GME office is unable to sponsor Canadians on Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) on J-1 visas for short-term electives (less than one (1) year).

Potential candidates for a VR experience should thoroughly review the Stanford GME website on this topic before e-mailing our division. Rotations are 2 to 4 weeks.
