Directed Reading Unit Enrollment Limits
Students may enroll in directed reading units under the supervision of a faculty member. Directed reading units must recognize students' personal academic interests and initiatives. The reading and research assignments contained in the proposal must be specific to directed reading units and may not overlap with the requirements of any other course. Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at the School of Medicine while enrolled in directed reading units.
Students may enroll in directed reading units with the following restrictions:
- All directed reading unit enrollment must first be approved by the student’s Academic Advising Dean.
- Students may enroll in a maximum of 9 directed reading units per quarter.
- Students may enroll in a maximum of 18 total directed reading units during medical school. Enrollment beyond 18 total units must be approved by the Committee on Performance, Professionalism, and Promotion (CP3).
- Students enrolling in 2 consecutive quarters of 3 (or fewer) units counting toward the MD degree requirements, outlined in Section 4.3: Academic Requirements for Graduation, will be reviewed by the CP3 to determine whether the SAP requirement is being fulfilled.
- Students failing to complete directed reading unit assignment requirements by the end of the enrolled quarter will receive a Fail (F) or Continuing (N) grade and will be reviewed by the CP3.
