Harman Scholar Program

The Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) Harman Scholar Endowments aim to support faculty with established research programs dedicated to maternal or child health research.
Note: UML applicants should only apply for either the Harman Scholar or Faculty Scholar Award, not both. If an applicant applies for both mechanisms, their application may not be accepted
MCHRI Harman Scholar Awards support mid-career Stanford faculty (Associate Professor) with University Medical Line (UML) appointments in clinical departments as follows:
- $100,000 per year for up to 3 years.
- The funds should be used primarily to support the PI’s salary and benefits, and secondarily to support research expenses.
UML applicants should only apply for either the Harman or Faculty Scholar Award, not both. If an applicant applies for both mechanisms, their application may not be accepted.
To be eligible for the award, the applicant must meet these criteria:
- Hold an MD, or its equivalent degree.
- Hold a UML faculty (Associate Professor) appointment in clinical departments.
- Have their primary site of clinical/academic activity at the SMCH.
- Be a member of MCHRI. Visit here to apply for MCHRI Membership.
- Have a track record of focusing the majority of their research uniquely on maternal or child health.
- Applicants must not have previously received or currently hold a Stanford-owned Faculty Scholar award or an MCHRI Harman or MCHRI Faculty Scholar Award.
Selection Criteria:
- Individuals at a critical juncture in their academic career where the Harman Scholar award will help secure, or bridge extramural funding will be prioritized.
- Significant maternal and child health impact.
- Track record in securing extramural funding.
- The adjudication committee will take into consideration current funding and any grants, e.g. R21, R01 or equivalent (DP2) under development or review.
- If awarded by MCHRI, the duration and award amount may be modified depending on the PI’s current funding.

If invited to submit a full proposal, the Chair (or Division Chief***) of the applicant’s primary department must submit a letter of nomination that:
- Confirms eligibility
- Enumerates the nominee’s current effort committed to clinical, education, research, and administration, and the time committed to these activities with receipt of a MCHRI Harman Scholar award.
- Provides attestation that the department will fund the capital facilities fund (CFF) obligation.
***If the Chair serves on the Faculty & Harman Scholar adjudication committee (MCHRI Executive Committee), the nomination letter will be submitted by the applicant’s Division Chief.
