Harman Scholar Program

Accepting Applications

The Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) Harman Scholars Endowments aim to support faculty with established research programs dedicated to maternal or child health research.

Important Note Harman Scholar Applicants:
UML applicants may only apply for either the Harman Scholar Award or the Faculty Scholar Award, not both. Applications submitted to both mechanisms may not be accepted.

Funding Details

MCHRI Harman Scholar Awards support mid-career Stanford faculty (Associate Professor) with University Medical Line (UML) appointments in clinical departments as follows:

  • $100,000 per year for up to 3 years.
  • The funds should be used primarily to support the PI’s salary and benefits, and secondarily to support research expenses.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the award, the applicant must meet these criteria:

  • Hold an MD or its equivalent degree.
  • Hold an appointment as UML faculty (Associate Professor) in clinical departments.
  • Have their primary site of clinical/academic activity at the SMCH.
  • Be a member of MCHRI. Apply for membership here.
  • Have a demonstrated track record of the majority of research focused uniquely on maternal or child health.
  • Not have previously received or currently hold a Stanford-owned Faculty Scholar Award, MCHRI Harman Scholar Award, or MCHRI Faculty Scholar Award.

 

Selection Criteria: 
Application will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Career Development: Priority given to individuals at a critical juncture in their academic career where the Harman Scholar Award can help secure or bridge extramural funding.
  • Maternal and Child Health Impact: Demonstrated significance of the applicant’s research on maternal and child health.
  • Translational Potential: Potential for translating research findings into clinical or population health impact.
  • Funding Track Record: Evidence of securing extramural funding, including:
    • Current funding and progress on grants (e.g. R21, R01 or equivalent (DP2) under development or review.
    • Note: The MCHRI award duration and amount may be adjusted based on the PI’s current funding status.

Forms for Applicants

Nomination

If invited to submit a full proposal, a letter of nomination must be submitted by the Chair (or Division Chief*) of the applicant’s primary department.  The letter must:

  • Confirm the applicant’s eligibility.
  • Enumerate the nominee’s current effort committed to clinical, education, research, and administrative responsibilities, and how this will change with the MCHRI Harman Scholar Award.
  • Explicitly address how this award will contribute to the applicant’s career development and advancement. The letter should describe how the proposed project and funding will enable the applicant to reach the next stage of their academic career.
  • Provide attestation that the department will fund the capital facilities fund (CFF) obligation. 
     

*If the Chair serves on the Faculty & Harman Scholar Adjudication Committee (MCHRI Executive Committee), the nomination letter must be submitted by the applicant’s Division Chief.
