Oke Anakwenze, MD, MBA

Bio
Dr. Anakwenze is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Head of Shoulder Surgery at Duke University. He completed his medical education at the world renowned, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He attended the University of Pennsylvania for his orthopedic surgery training before spending an additional year at Columbia University, completing a shoulder and elbow fellowship. With an interest in leadership and entrepreneurship, he obtained an MBA from UCLA through their executive program.
Prior to his role at Duke, he was the founder and CEO of Olympus Orthopedics and Advanced Surgery Center of San Diego, a successful orthopedic practice and outpatient joint replacement center respectively. Interested in entrepreneurship, he holds multiple patents in the medical device space.
In addition to building a world-class shoulder surgery program at Duke, Oke Anakwenze is passionate about education and research. He has served as principal investigator for numerous research grants. In addition, he has published over 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has given numerous scientific presentations around the country. He has been recognized for his efforts and has been the recipient of numerous research awards.
Believing in paying it forward, he serves as a mentor to many students, mostly from underprivileged backgrounds. The students range from undergrads to residents in training. He recently instituted the diversity committee, dedicated to increased transparency and providing opportunities, for the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES), the most significant organization for shoulder surgeons in the US and around the world.
