Principal Investigator

Nathan Lo, MD PhD

Nathan Lo is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at Stanford University. He is an infectious diseases physician-scientist and epidemiologist. He studies the transmission of infectious diseases and impact of public health decisions with an ultimate goal of informing public health policy. Nathan is broadly interested across tropical diseases and vaccine-preventable infections. He received a BS in Bioengineering from Rice University, and MD and PhD in Epidemiology from Stanford University. He completed a clinical residency in internal medicine at UCSF, with subspeciality training in infectious diseases. In 2022, he received a NIH/NIAID New Innovator award.

Current Members

Alyssa Amick, MPH

Alyssa is an MD/PhD student in the group. She received an MPH in infectious disease epidemiology and a bachelor’s degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology both from Yale. Previously, she worked with the MPEC team at MGH looking at HIV treatment and prevention strategies as a research specialist. Her current research interests include mathematical modeling to inform infectious disease policy.

Samantha Bents, BA

Samantha is a PhD student in the group. She is an E-IPER PhD student interested in studying the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases across changing temporal and spatial scales. She plans to investigate how these dynamics can be leveraged to design public health interventions targeting inequities in both the built and natural environment. Prior to beginning her PhD, she was a researcher at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Fogarty International Center (FIC) NIH where her work focused on predictive disease modeling. She holds a B.A. from Princeton University in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a concentration in Global Health and Health Policy.

Charlie Birse, PhD

Charlie is a senior research scientist in the group. He has experience in genomics and immunoassays, and works on lab projects related to sequencing schistosomes (causing the human disease schistosomiasis) and serology of parasitic infections (such as Strongyloides). He received a PhD in Genetics and did his post-doctoral work in Nick Proudfoot’s lab at the University of Oxford. He spent much of his career in industry at Human Genome Sciences, Celera Genomics, and most recently at Quest Diagnostics.

Kate Bubar, PhD

Kate is a post-doctoral scholar in the group. She received her PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2024. With a background in applied mathematics, statistics, and infectious disease epidemiology, she is passionate about using data-driven models to better understand infectious disease dynamics with the ultimate goal of informing public health policies and reducing disease burden.

Tigist Menkir, PhD

Tigist (Tiggy) is a postdoctoral scholar in the Lo and Andrews groups working on modeling typhoid booster vaccination strategies in diverse country settings. Prior to this, she completed her PhD in population health sciences (specialization: infectious disease epidemiology) at Harvard University, based at the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics (CCDD). Her primary research interests lie in developing models to improve epidemiological monitoring and intervention impact assessments in contexts with limited availability, timeliness, scope, and social representativeness of reported public health data.

Hailey Park, BA

Hailey is a research data scientist in the group. She received a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley with a double major in Public Health and Data Science. Her current interests include computational epidemiology and global environmental health. She previously worked with Dr. Blonder in the Macrosystems Ecology Laboratory on a project investigating the multi scale tradeoffs of leaf vein networks. Prior to that, she has worked with the Madsen Group at the Nutritional Policy Institute on their Soda Tax project, and with the non-profit ARTogether as a documentary research assistant. Aside from her academic interests, she enjoys listening to music, crafting, and being in the outdoors!

Sophia Tan, BA

Sophia is a research data scientist in the group. She received a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley with a double major in Data Science and Molecular & Cell Biology. She has worked with the WASH Benefits team to understand the complex relationships between child biomarkers and child growth and development outcomes. She is interested in exploring the intersection of global health and data science and utilizing computational tools to inform public health policy.
