My lab is interested in translational research with a focus on pulmonary diseases in immunocompromised persons. Using an airway transplant model, we have identified modifiable risk factors that may promote pathogen invasion in lung transplant recipients. We hope that these discoveries will lead to novel treatments for these prevalent infections. I am also the director of the Stanford Lung Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) clinic. In this clinic we are developing imaging methods for the earlier diagnosis of lung GVHD and exploring new treatments for pulmonary complications after hematopoietic cell transplant.

Advancing the understanding of host-pathogen interactions
Aspergillus fumigatus (Af)-related pulmonary diseases in lung transplantation – Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a life-threatening disease that affects immunocompromised patients. IA remains to be a common cause of morbidity and mortality in lung transplant patients. We are currently exploring the host-pathogen interaction in Af-related pulmonary diseases post-lung transplant.

Pioneering machine learning diagnostics for pulmonary diseases
Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) is the most severe form of chronic graft versus host disease after bone marrow transplant. At present delays in diagnosis portend poor outcomes. Drs. Sharifi and Hsu used chest computed tomography image to data and developed a machine learning model that can assist in the diagnosis of BOS.

Clinical trials in lung graft versus host disease
A present there is no treatment for lung GVHD. Dr. Hsu recently completed the Safety and Tolerability of Pirfenidone for Bronchiolitis obliterans Syndrome (STOP-BOS) trial. Dr. Hsu is a member of the Lung GVHD consortium who are conducting trials to improve the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary complications after stem cell transplant.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life saving therapy but requires a careful balance between circuit clotting and patient bleeding. Drs. Madhok and Hsu conducted a study to better understand patient factors that contribute to the complexity of anticoagulation management.
