Reporting a Lost or Stolen Device

Lost your phone? Stolen laptop, computer, phone, tablet, or other computing device belonging to Stanford, or containing Stanford information?

All SoM Community Members with missing devices should complete these THREE STEPS outlined below:

It is essential that the Stanford University Privacy Office be notified immediately. There are a number of federal and state privacy laws which may require Stanford to take very specific actions within very defined timelines. The Privacy Office will work with you to gather all of the relevant facts to ensure Stanford complies with all of our privacy obligations.

A loss or theft counts as a Privacy Incident; report it to the Privacy Office with the button above, through the Privacy Office website, by email at privacy (at) stanford.edu, or by phone: 650-725-1828

After reporting the loss to the Privacy office, complete the other two steps below.

Personal Responsibility

Any employee who loses, or has had stolen a device that is used to conduct Stanford business or access, store or transmit Stanford information is responsible for following the reporting procedure. Even if you only used your device to check your Stanford email occasionally, you still must follow the reporting procedure.

The Stanford University Privacy Office will review/investigate all reported lost or stolen devices to determine potential data loss and will determine the encryption status of the device, along with other key device details.
