The PGY-1 surgical internship at Stanford is tailored to IR, with dedicated Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology rotations. Surgical rotations are selected for their relevance to IR, and IR interns develop excellent patient management and technical skills in the OR. 

During the following 3 years of Diagnostic Radiology training, IR-DR Integrated residents train alongside their Diagnostic Radiology colleagues, developing a strong diagnostic imaging foundation. During these years, additional options for dedicated research time can be pursued as well as dedicated training in medical education. During PGY-5 year, residents are exposed to the breadth of IR at multiple sites through dedicated rotations, including Stanford, Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital, and VA Palo Alto. They also complete a one-month rotation in the CVICU.

During PGY-6 year, residents spend most of the time on Stanford IR with offsite rotations and elective time to pursue additional clinical experience or research.

The Stanford Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology is a tertiary and quaternary referral center that accepts complex cases from around the country and around the world, ensuring that our trainees are exposed to a broad and intriguing case mix. Stanford IR is renowned for its long history of outstanding patient care, world-renowned research, and an exceptional training experience.

Trainees graduate with substantial experience in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in multiple areas, including arterial disease, venous disease, oncology, hepatobiliary, GI and GU tract, gender-specific health, lymphatic, and more.

In addition to advanced specialty training at Stanford University Medical Center, the residency program integrates clinical training across multiple sites and disciplines as well as outpatient Interventional Radiology Clinics, multidisciplinary clinical electives, and a dedicated Cardiovascular ICU rotation. 

Our residents provide care to the diverse patient populations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, as Stanford Medicine continues to expand its reach. Residents spend the majority of their time at Stanford Hospital and associated outpatient clinics, with additional rotations at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Our residents also rotate to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for rotations in mammography and interventional radiology. These diverse clinical sites provide an exceptional and well-rounded experience with an astounding depth and breadth of cases.

The Stanford Interventional Radiology Division is renowned for its long history of outstanding research. Many endovascular treatments and protocols were pioneered at Stanford including innovations and optimizations in treatment of aortic disease, portal hypertension, liver directed therapy, venous thromboembolism, and advanced IVC filter retrieval. Stanford IR faculty are widely recognized for their significant contributions to the field. 

Stanford IR residents have a long track record of meaningful participation in research, successfully obtaining competitive grant funding and investigator awards locally and nationally. Dedicated research time is available to residents during PGY-2 through 4 years through the RadCombinator program for those residents interested in devoting time to research.  Residents regularly travel to and present at major national and international research meetings such as SIR and RSNA and publish their work in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. The department protects time for resident conference presentations and provides generous funding to support these endeavors.
