Get to Know Tomika Coates

In this newly created role, Tomika will lead our mission to deliver enterprise excellence by innovating our portfolio of services, leading our HR Services and Compensation teams​, and building an internal HR consulting group.

Tomika comes with an extraordinary background in shared services, compensation, and process improvement. Most recently, Tomika worked as the Director of HR and Payroll Shared Services for the University of California, Riverside (UCR). In that role, she expanded the client base which they served, streamlined and standardized processes using the Lean Six Sigma methodology, and created a roadmap for an optimized lean shared services environment.

Prior to joining UCR, Tomika held roles as a Compensation Consultant and Learning and Development Manager. She facilitated the development of a service culture, implemented market competitive pay programs, and designed HR systems within the credit union, medical device, and automotive industries.

Tomika is committed to life-long learning and development for herself and others. She facilitates process improvement workshops within the higher education community and mentors undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing careers in HR, finance, or business. Tomika is committed to making excellence inclusive. She was a founding member of the Black Faculty and Staff Association at UCR and also served on the campus’ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Climate Council. Outside of work, Tomika enjoys theater, party planning, and is often looking for players to join her in board games such monopoly, scrabble, or bingo.

Tomika’s personable, customer-focused approach, combined with her extensive experience in human resources and shared services, makes her an incredible addition to not only HRG but to the School of Medicine as a whole. We are excited for Tomika to bring her leadership and experience in the space to help as we improve our service models. Please join us in welcoming Tomika to her new role!

I also want to thank Susan Hoerger for her leadership of the Compensation and HR services teams over the past 14 years. In February 2021, Susan assumed the expanded role of Deputy Chief HR Officer with responsibilities for managing legal compliance and employee and labor relations and growing our internal operations and infrastructure teams for our department.
