Symptomatic Management of Metastatic Cancer

This exploratory Phase 1 mixed-methods study with Gilead investigates how digital tools can enhance MD-pharmacist collaboration in managing symptoms and supportive medications for patients with metastatic cancer, laying the groundwork for a potential Phase 2 implementation trial. (PI: Ron Li)

RECOVER - Long COVID

RECOVER is a $1.1 billion effort by the NIH to establish a national longitudinal cohort study investigating the pathology, epidemiology and potential biomarkers of long-COVID. Stanford is a leading site with over 1,000 enrolled patients. We have published over 130 papers to date (https://recovercovid.org/publications). We also have interventional studies under the RECOVER umbrella that I lead that are enrolling (RECOVER ENERGIZE and RECOVER VITAL).

Alathea Study - HIT Therapy

ALATHEA is a multi-site, randomized, double-blind Phase 2 pilot testing VLX-1005 vs placebo on top of standard care in suspected heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, targeting reduced platelet activation and faster platelet recovery; participants receive 7–14 days of therapy with the primary endpoint of daily rate of change in platelet count. (PI: Will Collins, Robert Diep; Sub-PIs: Neera Ahuja, Koorush Kabiri, Margaret Shyu.)

Ultrasound to Reduce Aspiration

GE Healthcare POCUS. This is an industry-sponsored trial where we are building an AI model that analyzes gastric ultrasound for peri-procedural implications to reduce aspiration risk. We are currently enrolling patients. (PIs: Andre Kumar, Evan Mullen, Vishnu Nair)

AI Tools in Bedside Ultrasound

This is an investigator-initiated study validating an FDA-approved AI tool for point-of-care ultrasound. We are comparing its accuracy to formal echo. We are currently collecting data. (PIs: Andre Kumar, Evan Mullen)

Opportunistic Imaging for Hepatic Steatosis

This RSNA-funded research uses opportunistic imaging on routine abdominal CT scans to automatically detect hepatic steatosis, which is currently underdiagnosed based on our prior retrospective studies. (Radiology Leads: Akshay Chaudhari, Robert Boutin and David Larson; Hospital Medicine Leads: Laura Derry, David Svec and Jason Hom; Hospital Medicine Co-Investigators: Andre Kumar, Jeff Ketchersid, Kathleen Jia, Thomas Lew, Lisa Shieh, Neera Ahuja)

AI and Cardiovascular Care

A multi-center study is testing whether artificial intelligence can analyze standard heart ultrasound images to detect early signs of liver and kidney disease, with the goal of improving integrated cardiovascular care and earlier diagnosis using opportunistic imaging. (PI: David Ouyang; Stanford Site PI: Alex Sandhu; Stanford Co-Investigators: Jason Hom, Laura Derry, Paul Heidenreich, Paul Cheng, Warren Sands)

Improving the patient experience: LLMs for radiology results interpretation and discharge paperwork

ARPA-Funded Study on Chatbots (including peri-discharge chatbots) to improve communication and efficiency. (PIs: Roxana Daneshjou and Akshay Chaudhari; Hospital Medicine Co-Investigator: Jason Hom; Hospital Medicine Collaborators: Poonam Hosamani, Kevin Keet, Minjoung Go, Evelyn Ling, Nidhi Rohatgi)

Targeting Food Insecurity

The FIRST initiative targets food insecurity to optimize diabetes control, lessen health disparities and hospital visits. By persistent intervention, education, and support, it seeks sustainable health progress for at-risk patients. (PIs: Christine Santiago and Neera Ahuja)
