Faculty Development & Education

Hospital Medicine faculty and staff share a spirit of lifelong learning to drive excellence in patient care, research, and teaching. Our division invests in educational programs and efforts to ensure our faculty and staff attain the skills and tools needed to catalyze innovations in clinical care, research, and education.

Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds

Our weekly Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds (HMGR) is a cornerstone of our continuing education activities. We feature guest speakers locally as well as nationally to address an array of comprehensive topics to advance collective knowledge and practices. Previous sessions have included: clinical updates, journal club, leadership skills, DEI and advocacy, mastering clinical teaching, as well as clinical case discussions. HMGR is an engaging platform for our community to learn, connect, innovate, and stay at the forefront of hospital medicine.

Monthly Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement (MMI) Conference

Our monthly Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement (MMI) conference is an integral part of our professional development efforts. Hospital medicine faculty across all sections present at MMI, with invited multi-disciplinary discussants across the Department of Medicine and Stanford Health Care institution. The conference provides a respectful and supportive forum for shared learning, collaborative analysis of complex clinical scenarios, and discuss improvement opportunities. This transparency and reflection fosters a robust culture of clinical excellence, quality and safety, while promoting QI skills in identifying problems, performing a root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.

Faculty Development Pathways

Hospital Medicine Mentorship Connection

Our division invites mentors and mentees annually to participate in 1:1 mentorship pairings. Mentors are faculty who have had at least three years of institutional experience. Mentees are asked to complete a brief questionnaire outlining areas of interest and specific skills they are interested in developing prior to being matched to a mentor with content expertise. Mentee-mentor pairs are invited to meet quarterly and will review a career development plan, self-reflection of clinical and scholarly skills, active projects, and CV.

New Faculty Onboarding Program

New faculty to Stanford Medicine is paired with a faculty buddy prior to their first day of clinical service. During the first week of clinical service, new faculty are invited to reach out to their buddy with any questions that may come up. Faculty buddies are encouraged to check in regularly throughout the first week, month, and quarter with new faculty to support a smooth transition and identify any opportunities for improvement.

SHAPE

The Stanford Hospitalist Advanced Practice & Education Program (SHAPE) was founded in 2015, by Stanford Hospitalist and residency alum, Dr. Andre Kumar. This is the first resident-created hospitalist training track in the US. Our division’s hospital medicine faculty are invited annually to provide focused mentorship to trainees participating in the SHAPE program.
