About Us

Welcome to the Division of Hospital Medicine

Interim Co-Chief Message

Welcome to the Stanford Division of Hospital Medicine! With over 80 faculty organized into 5 sections (General Medicine, Surgical Co-Management, Nocturnist, Tri-Valley, and Sequoia) and based in SHC Palo Alto, SHC Tri-Valley, and Sequoia, we are one of the largest Divisions in the Department of Medicine. Our division is a vital participant in the clinical, research, and education missions of Stanford Medicine and Stanford University. We sit at the intersection of these two organizations, with Stanford Hospital on one side of our Department offices and the amazing resources of the University’s data science and engineering quads on the other. Our division plays a vital role in our evolving clinical mission, serving the Bay Area community and beyond. As part of Stanford University, we are connected to resources ranging from Nobel Prize-winning research to a diverse set of faculty and graduate students across Stanford's 7 Schools.

We are dedicated to fostering professional fulfillment for our academic hospitalists and staff.  Our commitment to high retention and community morale is reflected in our division’s wellness and resilience curriculum and mentorship programs. Many of our faculty are engaged in leadership positions across Stanford Medicine, providing their guidance and support in medical education, clinical research, informatics, quality improvement, health policy and health economics. With such diverse and unique expertise, our division is a leader in hospital-based clinical and translational research, leveraging the power of AI and computational modeling to enhance and streamline clinical workflows.

Stanford Medicine is one of the nation’s preeminent institutions for medical education. Our division plays a key role in pre-clinical and clinical education. The Bedside Medicine/Stanford-25 Medical Education program is led by our faculty with an international reach and our long-standing SHAPE (Stanford Hospital Advanced Preparation & Education) hospitalist curriculum for housestaff was one of the first of its kind in the country!

This is an exciting time at Stanford Medicine. We are embracing all the challenges of a busy clinical enterprise while working to advance the future of medicine and healthcare delivery. Together, we can shape the practice of medicine locally, nationally, and globally. We look forward to discussing whether our program is a fit for your career goals and interests.
