Fellowship Rotations

The BMT rotation takes place at Stanford Hospital under the direction of the division of BMT, which is separate from the divisions of hematology and oncology. Heme/onc fellows take primary responsibility for a handful of patients, alongside BMT fellows and senior medical residents. The attending physician rounds twice per day, and there is periodic overnight home call. Fellows also have the opportunity to attend BMT clinic and conferences. There is broad exposure to cell-based therapies, including novel CAR-T technologies.

This outpatient rotation provides exposure to transfusion medicine, blood banking, and laboratory hematology. There is no call during this rotation, and all weekends are off.

This outpatient rotation takes place at the Stanford Cancer Center. Fellows have the opportunity to work with multiple faculty members, in addition to attending continuity clinics and didactics. There is no call during this rotation, and all weekends are off.

Working with an attending and internal medicine housestaff, the Med 8 fellow is responsible for leading the inpatient hematology team. Patients on this service are admitted for treatment of acute leukemia, complications of leukemia therapy, and complex bleeding/clotting disorders. In addition to leading the team, the fellow performs the majority of the bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures necessary for patient care. Fellows receive one day off per week while on Med 8 and help with emergency department questions and some outside calls after hours. Despite being an intense rotation, it is among the most popular and most rewarding for our trainees.

This outpatient rotation takes place at the Stanford Cancer Center. As fellows repeat this rotation multiples times, the clinic schedule is built so that each fellow has ample exposure to all cancer types, including GI, GU, ENT, thoracic, breast, cutaneous, lymphoma, and neuro-oncology. Fellows have the opportunity to work with multiple attendings, in addition to attending continuity clinics, didactics, and tumor boards. There is no call during this rotation, and all weekends are off. One afternoon per week is allotted for personal time (ie reading, research, doctors’ appointments, etc.).

Med 10 is an inpatient oncology service dedicated to the care of solid tumor and lymphoma patients. Though this service is primarily run by the Med 10 attending and residents, the inpatient oncology fellow helps manage the Med 10 patients receiving chemotherapy and provides education/assistance to the Med 10 residents. In addition, the fellow also provides consultative oncology to the medical and surgical services, as well as follows oncology patients admitted to other teams. This care is provided in coordination with the dedicated oncology consult attending. The fellow triages after-hours oncology consults from the emergency department and receives one day off per week.

This outpatient rotation is two weeks in length, though it can be extended to one month based upon individual preference. Fellows work with the palliative care teams at the Palo Alto VA or Stanford Hospital, and have opportunities to work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. There is no call during this rotation, and all weekends are off.

Working with an attending, the hematology consult fellow provides complex hematologic consultation for the inpatient services at Stanford and Lucille Packard Hospitals. Common evaluations include new evaluations of cytopenias for patients admitted to the general medicine services, as well as providing support to the solid organ transplant, obstetric, and surgical services. Fellows receive one day off per week and help provide coverage for inpatient hematology (Med 8) during weekends.

Located at the Palo Alto VA, fellows provide consultative hematology to the medical and surgical services, as well as manage the chemotherapy of hematology patients admitted to the medical services. They participate in two VA hematology clinics per week and help complete e-consults. There is one day off per week, with some coverage of Stanford inpatient hematology on weekends.

Located at the Palo Alto VA, fellows provide consultative oncology to the medical and surgical services, as well as manage the chemotherapy of oncology patients admitted to the medical services. They participate in one weekly VA oncology clinic, help complete e-consults, and receive one day off per week.
