Hematology-Focused Track Stanford Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program
Overview
Stanford Medicine's Hematology/Oncology Fellowship is proud to introduce a dedicated Hematology-Focused Track, a specialized pathway within our ACGME-accredited program designed for fellows committed to building careers in classical (non-malignant) hematology. This track is modeled after the American Society of Hematology's Hematology-Focused Fellowship Training Program (HFFTP) - a national initiative that has been adopted by leading academic centers across the country.
Program Structure
The Hematology-Focused Track operates within Stanford's existing three-year Hematology/Oncology Fellowship. Fellows benefit from the full fellowship infrastructure - didactics, mentorship, research support, and institutional resources - while following a curriculum purposefully designed around classical hematology. Fellows will have exposure to subspecialty faculty with deep expertise in thrombosis and hemostasis, hemoglobinopathies, bone marrow failure, and autoimmune hematologic disorders.
Opportunities for cross-training in other fields (e.g. Transfusion Medicine, Vascular Medicine, Cellular Therapy/BMT, Immunology, Med/Peds) are actively in development.

- Board eligibility ABIM Hematology (single-board certification only)
- Research component ~50% protected time
Curriculum
Fellows complete 12 months of dedicated hematology clinical rotations for board eligibility and 24 months of continuity clinic to fulfill ACGME requirements and establish eligibility for ABIM single-board certification in hematology. The latter portion of fellowship includes protected scholarly time for mentored research, medical education, global health, and other cross-disciplinary academic opportunities. Continuity clinic responsibilities will be maintained throughout.
Core Clinical Rotations Include
- Classical hematology inpatient consult service
- Inpatient malignant hematology (SHC and VA)
- Outpatient hematology clinic (thrombosis, hemostasis, hemoglobinopathies/thalassemias, bone marrow failure, malignant hematology, lymphoma)
- Hemophilia treatment center
- Transfusion medicine and apheresis
- Palliative care
- Hematopathology and laboratory medicine
Eligibility and How to Apply
Eligibility requirements for the Hematology-Focused Track are identical to those of the Stanford Hematology/Oncology Fellowship. Competitive applicants will demonstrate a genuine commitment to classical hematology through their personal statement, prior research or clinical experience, and letters of recommendation. Applicants with broader interests in general hematology or malignant hematology are also encouraged to apply.
Stanford participates in the NRMP Match. Applicants interested in the Hematology-Focused Track should indicate this interest in their application materials and during interviews.
