2025 Cohort

Steven Gong (he/him)
Matriculated 2024, SMS2
Steven, from San Francisco’s Chinatown, is dedicated to transforming healthcare from a privilege into a right—starting with how medicine is financed, valued, and delivered. He graduated cum laude from UC Irvine as the Lauds & Laurels Outstanding Undergraduate Student, earning a BS in Human Biology and BAs in Economics and Political Science. Before medical school, he worked at the White House, HHS, NIH, and DOJ, led a patient advocacy nonprofit, and published research on health disparities, neuropolitics, and policy. As a Health Equity Scholar, Steven hopes to build community and organize—across policy, business, and political economy (his MBA focus)—to ensure no patient ever has to choose between medical or economic survival. Outside of academia, he enjoys DJing for the medical school, going on side quests, and hanging out with his cats, Mandu (“Dumpling/Steamed Bun”) and Hodu (“Walnut”).
Masters Degree: MBA - Political Economy & Healthcare

Helen Hailu (she/her/hers)
Matriculated 2025 (med program) SMS1

Helen holds a B.A. in Public Policy Analysis and Biology from Pomona College and first joined Stanford Medicine as a HEE Postbac Scholar. During her gap years as a HEE Postbac researcher, Helen was involved in community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects examining interventions like peer navigation and food is medicine programs. Helen is passionate about linking her interests in clinical practice to research and policy implications, primarily promoting community-centered approaches to addressing health disparities. Her research interests lie at the intersection of implementation science, health policy, and advocacy through the lens of health equity. Helen is excited to join the Health Equity Scholars Program and be in community with and learn from peers and mentors who share her vision for advancing health equity!

My name is Katelin Isakoff, and I am originally from Simsbury, Connecticut. I earned my undergraduate degree in Biology and Community Health at Tufts University. Through this program, I hope to deepen my understanding of how structural inequities shape health outcomes and gain practical tools to address disparities in access to care. I am particularly passionate about advancing health equity in the management of musculoskeletal injuries, where socioeconomic barriers often limit access to rehabilitation and preventative resources. Outside of academia, I enjoy swimming, running, and searching for the best coffee shops in the Bay Area!
Masters Degree: MPH

Now a third-year medical student at Stanford, I am passionate about advancing health equity, particularly in addressing the disparities I have witnessed within Latino communities, and I hope this program will equip me with new tools to advocate for more inclusive and accessible care. Beyond medicine, I enjoy going on hikes, exploring new restaurants, and hanging out with my friends.
