Welcome to Stanford Hand Surgery

Letter From the Chief

The Robert A. Chase Hand & Upper Limb Center is a unique collaboration between two entities within Stanford University's School of Medicine: the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Surgery.

Our multi-disciplinary approach allows for comprehensive care of the hand and upper limb. The combined talents and perspectives of our faculty members foster the exceptional teaching and research integral to the center's mission.

In addition to providing world-class patient care, our faculty are among the world’s leading researchers, teachers, and clinicians in the field of hand surgery.

A home for research and the sharing of ideas, the Robert A. Chase Center often hosts conferences and lecture series, holds special educational events, and administers the prestigious Stanford Hand & Upper Limb Fellowship program.

In collaboration with our shoulder and elbow colleagues, our faculty treat all facets and conditions of the hand and upper limb. We treat patients across the lifespan: we treat pediatric conditions such as congenital anomalies, sports injuries of all ages, and crippling arthritis. We also see and treat common conditions like trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, and Dupuytren’s contracture of the fingers.

Our research is internationally and nationally recognized, with our faculty receiving prestigious federal (NIH and VA), society, private, and industry funding that supports investigation and innovation across the breadth of research opportunities. These include laboratory investigation of how nerves regenerate; translational research that addresses biomechanics of injury and arthritis; and quality research that includes how and why we treat disease.

We are committed to excellence in research and clinical care, in the spirit of Robert A. Chase MD, the first chair of surgery at Stanford School of Medicine whose interdisciplinary approach to the hand and upper limb has set the standard for education, clinical care, and research.

On behalf of the entire faculty we appreciate your interest in Stanford and look forward to meeting you.
