Welcome to Stanford Hand Surgery

Letter From Co-Directors

The Robert A. Chase Hand & Upper Limb Center unites faculty from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford Medicine to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary care for the full spectrum of hand and upper limb conditions. In close collaboration with our shoulder and elbow colleagues, we care for patients across the lifespan—from pediatric congenital differences to complex fractures and trauma, sports injuries, and degenerative conditions such as wrist and finger arthritis.

Our internationally recognized faculty diagnose and treat both common and highly specialized conditions, including trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, and Dupuytren’s contracture, while also serving as regional and national referral center for complex cases. This breadth allows us to provide continuity of care while maintaining deep subspecialty expertise.

Beyond clinical excellence, our faculty are internationally recognized leaders in research and education in hand surgery. The Center serves as a hub for academic exchange and innovation, hosting national and international conferences, lecture series, and special events, and overseeing the renowned Stanford Hand & Upper Limb Fellowship program.

Our research portfolio spans basic science investigations in nerve regeneration and tendon and bone healing; translational studies in trauma, arthritis, and biomechanics; and clinical/health services research focused on outcomes, quality, and value in surgery. These efforts are supported by competitive funding from federal agencies, professional societies, private foundations, and industry partners, reflecting the national and international impact of our work.

Exceptional care at the Chase Center is made possible by an outstanding interdisciplinary team of advanced practice providers and certified hand therapists who partner closely with our surgeons and patients. We also collaborate extensively with colleagues in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Radiology, Neurology, and Pain Management to ensure truly comprehensive, coordinated care.

Guided by a commitment to clinical excellence, discovery, and education, the Center honors the legacy of Dr. Robert A. Chase, Stanford Medicine’s first chair of surgery, whose interdisciplinary vision continues to shape our mission and future direction.

We are proud to advance the care of patients with hand and upper limb conditions and to train the next generation of leaders in the field.

Thank you for your interest in Stanford—our entire faculty looks forward to meeting you.
