Stanford Medicine Graduation Ceremony 2024

Academic regalia is required to participate in all Stanford University Commencement ceremonies.

Dual Degree Candidates

If both of your degrees will be awarded from the School of Medicine, order one doctoral package and an additional hood for use during our diploma ceremony. Annoucements and additional items are also available for order on the Stanford Bookstore's Commencement website.

Please email us in advance if you need assistance getting on or off the stage. Graduates will process from the first floor of LKSC, over the lawn to the tent, and then walk up a short set of stairs onto the stage. The seating is divided among seven risers. An ADA/wheelchair lift may be available.

The deadline to apply to graduate for Spring 2023 is 5:00 pm PT on April 14, 2023. Late applications can be submitted before 5:00 pm PT on June 2, 2023. You will incur late filing fees for each application. Applications will NOT be accepted after the late filing deadline.

If you decide to rescind your application to graduate but still want to participate in the Stanford Medicine ceremonies, please submit a walkthrough petition form. It will need a signature from your student services advisor or your faculty advisor.

The Stanford Medicine Graduation Diploma Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 17, at 1:00 pm PT. The ceremony is school specific. Diplomas will be mailed directly to your address on file in AXESS.

The Stanford University Commencement Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 18, at 9:30 am PT in Stanford Stadium. The ceremony is university-wide; all graduate schools will be present. You will process into the stadium as a school.

One of Stanford Medicine's commencement traditions is that graduates can be greeted by their children on stage as they are hooded. There is an established process for those who would like their children to participate. Details will be sent to confirmed ceremony participants in May.

Diploma covers are distributed at graduation ceremonies. Diplomas are mailed following degree conferral. Diploma delivery takes between 6 to 8 weeks in the U.S., and may take longer for international shipping. Expedited shipping options are available at a cost.

In addition to your traditional paper diploma, Stanford University provides a Certified Electronic Diploma (CeDiploma) to all graduates. Your CeDiploma will be available approximately 4 to 6 weeks after your degree has been posted to your record.

Your diploma name will default to the legal name listed in Stanford University's educational records. You will verify your name when you apply to graduate in Axess that the diploma name listed is correct, or to provide any changes required.

Please wear business casual attire under your regalia along with shoes suitable for walking on grass and climbing stairs. Regalia is required in order to be on stage.

Coterminal students should order the Master regalia package for the Stanford Medicine ceremony. Check with your undergraduate department to confirm that you can wear the master's robe in their ceremony as well.

If you are receiving two Stanford Medicine degrees, you should order the Doctoral regalia package and add an additional hood to your order. Your name will be called twice during the ceremony. If you are receiving an MS, you will wear your gold hood and carry your other hood during the processional. If you are receiving an MD and PhD, you will carry both hoods during the processional.

MS/MD and MD/PhD students will be seated with the MD students. MS/PhD students will be seated with the PhD students. Regardless of degrees earned, you should only wear one hood at a time.

To be considered for walkthrough participation, MS students must complete at least 36 units. PhD students must complete their oral defense or plan to complete it before the end of the calendar year.

All petitions must have a signature indicating departmental approval from your student services officer or your advisor. Submit completed petitions via your SmartSheet registration.

Students whose petitions are received on or before the April 15 deadline will have their names included in the printed diploma ceremony program and can register to attend the brunch and ceremony. After this date, we will only accommodate walkthrough participants as space permits and your name will not be listed in the program.
