GME Tips on Conducting Virtual Interviews Part 1 Part 2
Virtual Interviews
Our GMEC reviewed the current national recommendations regarding recruitment, prior local experience, and medical student, resident, fellow, and program perspectives. The following recommendations have been revised and approved by the GME Committee:
2025-2026 GME Recruitment Recommendations
We endorse a transparent, fair, and equitable recruitment process:
1. Interviews: We recommend following your sub-specialty’s program director association/GME organization/central agency’s recommendation regarding in-person versus virtual interviews. In the absence of subspecialty recommendations, we recommend following the AAMC recommendations to conduct only virtual interviews. We do not recommend hybrid interviewing (i.e., some applicants interviewing virtually and some in-person) because of the risk of inequities resulting from applicants’ different resources and abilities to visit in person.
2. Second Looks: Be aware that second looks put pressure on applicants. We recommend taking opportunities to decrease the pressure (e.g., lock your rank list, emphasize that attending a second look will not increase someone’s rank in your program).
