Making independent practice less daunting
Welcome
The Transition to Practice workshop series provides information and resources to current senior residents and fellows as they develop their careers in independent practice. The workshop aim is to make the process less daunting to house staff by having selected speakers cover key issues identified as currently lacking in residency training. Trainees from all specialties are invited to attend.
These workshops are hosted by Dr. Melanie Gephart Hayden, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, and Dr. Laurence Katznelson, Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education.

Faculty
Laurence Katznelson, MD
- Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education
- Professor of Department of Neurosurgery
Laurence Katznelson, MD received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and performed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He then performed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, and then stayed on as faculty in the Neuroendocrine Unit. Dr. Katznelson is currently a Professor of Neurosurgery and Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Katznelson was the endocrinology fellowship Program Director at Stanford for the past 10 years. At Stanford, he is the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and the Chair of the GME Committee. Dr. Katznelson is the Medical Director of the Pituitary Center at Stanford Health Care.
Melanie Hayden Gephart, MD

Melanie is an Assistant Professor in Neurosurgery, with an active neurosurgical practice focusing on brain tumors. Her translational basic science lab focuses on developing novel therapies for malignant primary and metastatic central nervous system tumors. During neurosurgery residency she served as the sole resident representative on the Residency Review Committee for Neurosurgery at ACGME and for four years on the Stanford Graduate Medical Education Committee (GME).
She developed this transition to practice course based on her work with ACGME and Stanford GME, with the goal of easing the switch from residency to independent practice.
