5 billion people do not have access to safe, affordable surgical and anesthesia care when needed. Although this disproportionately affects patients in low- and middle-income countries, there were over 2,400 referrals made in 2019 for free surgery in the San Francisco Bay Area for patients lacking medical insurance or financial means. The Leadership Council of the Global Anesthesia Division partners with multiple societies, non-profit industry, and other academic institutions to advance the conversation surrounding the global surgery crisis. Committee appointments, board membership, publications, research, conference presentations, and increasing social media presence allow us a voice and a seat at the table to advocate for those patients in greatest need. It is our goal to improve perioperative care everywhere by facilitating the education and development of our colleagues with limited resources and by addressing social barriers.
