Open for applications from CA-1 and CA-2 residents, the Global Anesthesia Pathway aims to prepare residents for ethical and informed engagement in global health work. The resident pathway illuminates the many ways perioperative providers can serve patients facing healthcare barriers and improve the social obstacles contributing to health access disparities. Our Division believes global health starts at home and strives to address problems facing our local communities in addition to working with partners across the globe.

The Global Anesthesia Fellowship

The Global Anesthesia Fellowship:

The postdoctoral Global Anesthesia fellowship program is designed to increase fellows’ breadth and depth of knowledge regarding complex issues contributing disparities in health. The ideal fellow will have plans to incorporate the knowledge and skillset gained over the fellowship year to improve perioperative healthcare delivery for disadvantaged patients. The curriculum focuses on the advancement of global health research and educational partnerships. Tailored to each individual physician’s background, the fellowship year included several core components:

Up to 12 weeks working in a medically underserved setting
Completion of a capstone project in Global Anesthesia
Direct mentorship from a small group of experienced faculty
Clinical work as an anesthesia attending in an academic setting
Wide international network for collaboration and partnership
Funding for conference attendance for presentation of project(s)
Updated core curriculum including lectures, seminars, and small groups

Please Note: All clinical fellows must obtain a California medical liscense prior to starting their fellowship program. You may contact the Medical Board of California 2005 Evergreen Street, Suite 1200, Sacramento, CA 95815, Phone 1-800-633-2322, for applications and information. Please allow a minimum of 6-9 months for processing. Fellowship start date is August 1st, but may flexible depending on an applicant's unique circumstances. Applications will not be reviewed until all application materials have been received. Applications are due by December 31st of the year prior to the fellowship start date.

Clinical Anesthesia Fellows:

The Global Anesthesia Division is pleased to work closely with other clinical divisions in the department and offer global health rotations to fellows in the training programs for Regional Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, and Critical Care Anesthesia. Other subspecialties are welcome to get involved as long as a project can be established with an international partner. The clinical fellow is responsible for finding a faculty preceptor for their international rotation. Acquiring funding is competitive; opportunities are listed below:

Selection Criteria

The department selection committee notifies CIGH of the 2 department awardees for independent rotations.
The selection criteria is as follows:

Confirmed faculty preceptor in-country for 2 weeks with trainee (please include CV)
Fellow must get time away and be in-country for a minimum of 4 weeks (research or elective month)
Strength, feasibility, and necessity of project proposal (included in sponsor letter and application questions)
Existing global health partnerships
Potential for long-term involvement with Stanford Global Anesthesia (site, trainee, faculty preceptor)
Previous global health experience or research
Language ability
