General Surgery Residency Awards 2024
Stanford’s General Surgery Residency Program presents awards annually to faculty and residents involved in the program. These awards were announced and presented at Greco Grand Rounds on Tuesday, June 18 and at the Chiefs’ Graduation Dinner on Thursday, June 27.
RESIDENT AWARDS
ABSITE AWARD: Drs. Leon Naar, Charlotte Rajasingh, Daniel Ahn, and Dan Stoltz
-on achieving ABSITE scores in the top percentile!
House Olympics Winners: Big Bear
Intern of the Year: Dr. Camille Hironaka
-Best intern voted by senior residents, PGY4-5
Consult Resident of the Year: Dr. Chloe Nobuhara
-We would like to acknowledge the service that our PGY2 residents provide on consult call. They represent Surgery when they go to the emergency room or consult for other services. We know that the quality of a late night phone call can make or break your call.
Resident Research Award: Dr. John Farag
-awarded for the best research manuscript. In recognition of your outstanding research and exceptional contributions to the science of surgery. It is voted on by the Faculty Research Award Committee. Manuscript Title: Rapid intraoperative manufacturing of angiogenic cellular collagen patches for ischemic cardiomyopathy
Best Resident Teacher Award: Dr. James Agolia
-bestowed upon you by the medical students for your exceptional teaching, professionalism, and dedication to patient care as voted by the 2023-24 Surgery Clerkship students.
Samuel L. Kountz, MD Humanitarian Award: Kirbi Yelorda, MD, MS
-given yearly to the resident most personifying Dr. Kountz's attributes of professionalism, compassion, and respect for the dignity of their fellow men and women.
John Henry Smith III, MD Award: Sunnie Y. Wong, MD, PhD
-honors a PGY 4-5 surgical resident who has distinguished themselves through their dedication, hard work, honesty, and genuine concern for patients
FACULTY AWARDS
Affiliated Faculty Award: Dr. Elliott Brill
-presented to a surgical educator working at one of the affiliated sites. It also recognizes the importance of mentorship in developing, encouraging and supporting surgical residents dedicated to outstanding surgical care.

Stanford APP Award: Kristan J. Wheeler, PA-C
-given annually to the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant who most personifies excellence in surgical patient care, teamwork, and dedication to resident education, as voted on by residents in the program.
Affiliated APP Award: Libbey A. Michelini, PA-C
-given annually to the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant from LPCH, VA, Kaiser, or SCVMC who most personifies excellence in surgical patient care, teamwork, and dedication to resident education, as voted on by residents in the program.
Fellow Teaching Award: Frank Yang Lu, MD
-honors a fellow in the Department of Surgery who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and excellence in educating residents.
George P. Yang, MD Award: Daniel J. Delitto, MD, PhD & Cara A. Liebert, MD
-presented to a junior university faculty (Assistant Professor at Stanford, Tri-Valley, VA & LPCH) to recognize the faculty’s contribution to the clinical and academic careers of our residents. The award recognizes the importance of mentorship in developing, encouraging, and supporting surgical residents dedicated to high quality clinical care and advancing the science of surgery.
John Austin Collins, MD Award: David A. Spain, MD
-honors a university faculty member from Stanford, Tri-Valley, VA, & LPCH for their outstanding efforts, accomplishments, and support that has led to the successful development of our residents' clinical and academic careers. This award recognizes the importance of mentorship in encouraging and supporting surgical residents dedicated to high-quality clinical care and advancing the science of surgery.
Chief Resident Award: Aaron Dawes, MD
-Given to a faculty member selected by their Chief Residents
