Spotlight: Victoria Sanchez

What initially drew you to surgery, and how has that passion evolved over time?

"I was drawn to general surgery during medical school because I saw that general surgeons were not only technically skilled surgeons but also outstanding physicians outside the operating room. They were making complex decisions in high-acuity situations and taking ownership of every aspect of patient care. I was inspired by that level of responsibility and breadth of practice. Over time, my enthusiasm for surgery has continued to grow as I've gained a deeper appreciation for the privilege of caring for patients through some of the most challenging moments of their lives."

What’s your favorite aspect of Stanford’s culture?

"Stanford has a unique culture that values excellence while embracing diverse perspectives and career paths. I am constantly surrounded by people with different backgrounds, experiences, and interests, whether they are residents, fellows, or faculty leaders. We also care for an incredibly diverse patient population, which challenges us to think broadly, communicate effectively, and continually learn from the people we serve. It creates an environment that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply rewarding."

Do you have a favorite quote or motto that you live by?

"'No hay mal que por bien no venga.' Translated, it means, 'There is no bad from which some good does not come.' It's a reminder that even difficult situations can bring unexpected opportunities, valuable lessons, or positive outcomes. I try to carry that perspective with me in both my personal life and my surgical training."
