The hospitalist program within the Stanford Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, established in 2023, aims to enhance the quality of care for our complex GI patient population. The hospitalist program is designed to support medicine physicians with an interest in gastroenterology. It offers an opportunity for hospitalist physicians to collaborate with the GI team while also dedicating time to research and scholarly activities, helping them gain exposure and build skills to advance their careers in gastroenterology. Nearly two-thirds of the schedule is dedicated to scholarly pursuits. We can facilitate collaboration with faculty across the division and foster clinical and academic interests in the full breadth of gastroenterology.
By hospitalists overseeing the care of primary GI patients in collaboration with APPs, inpatient GI faculty can focus more on providing consultative care, teaching and procedures. The program ideally involves a 2-year commitment. There are usually 3-4 hospitalists each year.
Hospitalists benefit from the didactic curriculum designed for gastroenterology fellows and are invited to participate in weekly GI Grand Rounds, meet with invited speakers, and attend various educational conferences.
