GI Electives for Residents and Medical Students
OVERVIEW
Residents and medical students, both at Stanford and from other sites, have several opportunities to participate in the clinical care of gastroenterology patients.
Residents and students are welcome to our elective rotations in inpatient gastroenterology consultation service, inpatient hepatology service and outpatient clinics for both gastroenterology and hepatology. During these rotations, residents and students are integrated within the care team and are able to observe various endoscopic procedures. Additional opportunities are also available at our affiliate hospital sites.

The Gastroenterology inpatient rotation is designed to provide training and experience to acquire the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes in digestive diseases. Medicine residents will have an opportunity to assess and treat a diverse array of gastroenterology disorders.
The resident will serve as a GI consultant and will provide general gastroenterology management under the direct supervision of both faculty and fellows. The gastroenterology inpatient rotation site is at Stanford University Hospital (SUH). The resident will be responsible for daily continuity of care on the inpatient service by reporting daily findings to both the fellow and attending. The resident will also have opportunity to observe endoscopy procedures performed on the inpatient GI service.

The inpatient hepatology elective is designed to expose medicine residents and students to patients with cirrhosis and complications from liver disease that frequently lead to hospital admissions. The rotation is designed as an educational elective, not a primary inpatient medicine service. This is a Monday – Friday rotation only; there are no weekend expectations.
As a member of the transplant team, trainees will have an opportunity to assess, manage and treat patients that are undergoing a workup for liver transplantation. Trainees will also be involved in the care of patients following liver transplantation, gaining an exposure to immediate and delayed complications following liver transplant. Patients on the liver service are cared for on the general medical/surgical floors and the ICU. Residents and students will have an opportunity to learn from patients requiring various levels of care.
The trainee will be joining an inpatient team inclusive of an attending hepatologist, 1-2 fellows, and advanced practice providers, providing valuable multidisciplinary care. A sample schedule is shown below:
