Training Sites

A broad and diverse clinical training experience is provided across three participating medical centers: Stanford University Medical Center, VA Palo Alto Health Care System, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Fellows rotate through all three medical centers.

Stanford University Medical Center


Fellows manage the inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology consult services and are supervised by faculty in all consultations and related procedures.

 

Fellows also obtain substantial clinical outpatient training by participating in weekly general GI and subspecialty clinics and outpatient endoscopy procedures.

The Stanford Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology has approximately 2,500 inpatient consultations, over 20,000 outpatient visits, and more than 10,000 endoscopy procedures per year. The Stanford Liver Transplant Program performs approximately 80-90 liver transplantations annually. The comprehensive endoscopy unit at the Stanford is fully equipped with state-of-the-art instruments not only for outstanding patient care but also for interdisciplinary and collaborative research unique to Stanford.

In November 2019, Stanford Health Care’s new 824,000-square-foot state-of- the-art hospital opened, bringing its total bed count to 605. Stanford Medicine’s many transformative advances across research, education, and patient care build upon the organization’s legacy of innovation.

VA Palo Alto Health Care System


Fellows manage the inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology consult services and are supervised by faculty in all consultations and related procedures.

Fellows also obtain substantial clinical outpatient training by participating in weekly clinics and outpatient endoscopy procedures.

The Palo Alto VA Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology has approximately 500 inpatient consultations, 4,000 outpatient consultations, and more than 3,000 endoscopic procedures annually. The endoscopy unit provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic dilation, capsule endoscopy, and double-balloon enteroscopy.

The VA Palo Alto Health Care System is an 800-bed, multi-campus facility that serves as a tertiary referral center for other VA hospitals in Northern California and Nevada. It has consistently been rated one of the best VA hospitals in the nation.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center


Fellows manage the inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology consult services and are supervised by faculty in all consultations and related procedures.

Fellows also obtain substantial clinical outpatient training by participating in weekly clinics and outpatient endoscopy procedures.

The SCVMC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has over 14,000 outpatient visits and 1,200 inpatient consults per year. SCVMC offers a full-range of comprehensive gastroenterological services, including ERCP, EUS, capsule endoscopy, deep enteroscopy, and pH/motility studies, as well as specialized care in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Motility and Transplant Hepatology.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is a 574-bed acute-care tertiary medical center and teaching hospital affiliated with the Stanford University School of Medicine. It is a public safety-net hospital owned and operated by the County of Santa Clara.
