The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition recognizes the importance of dedicated outreach for the early detection and effective treatment of gastrointestinal and liver disorders.Through its pediatric training program in Santa Clara Medical Valley Hospital, faculty and residents provide expert service to the underserved children of Santa Clara County. Division-run outreach clinics throughout the western United States, Hawaii and Alaska allow clinicians to identify at-risk children, bring them to Stanford medical center for further evaluation and treatment and provide follow-up services in their local communities. The division empowers parents and other caregivers through a range of classes and support groups, helping them better understand and manage their children's liver and gastrointestinal conditions before and after treatment. Faculty members also share their expertise with the larger biomedical community through Continuing Medical Education courses, symposiums and their active participation in national and international organizations.
