How to Win $ for Your Research

This workshop will discuss strategies for identifying and applying for funding opportunities. Dr. Helms will describe funding opportunities appropriate for different career stages and practical tips for writing typical sections of applications. Time will be allotted for discussion.

Dr. Michael Helms 

Michael Helms, PhD, MBA is the Director of Research Development for Team Science in the Department of Medicine at Stanford Medicine. Over the past 13+ years, he has assisted hundreds of faculty at all ranks with identifying funding opportunities and applying for them, with a focus on grantsmanship. His assistance has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in new funding from federal sponsors, e.g., NIH, VA, and DOD, and foundations, including the Stanford CTSA, the Stanford Diabetes Research Center, the Stanford Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and Stanford Precision Health for Ethnic and Racial Equity (SPHERE) Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center grants, to name a few. He has received funding for small business (SBIR) grants from NIH and served on a study section. Before joining Stanford, he spent 10 years in the biotechnology industry, most recently as General Manager with Complete Genomics. He has a PhD in biochemistry and an MBA degree.
