2020 LGBTQ+ Forum

Beckett Maravelias is a white, queer, non-binary trans activist, writer, and Stanford staff member. In varying capacities, they have worked in political and community organizing, LGBTQ+ advocacy, anti-racist activism, and organizational advancement for over a decade. Before coming to Stanford, Beckett lived in Minneapolis, where they worked to build coalitions, communities, and funding streams to support organizations and initiatives advancing LGBTQ+ health and mental health, racial and social justice, and community-driven systems change work.

At Stanford, Beckett works to support funding efforts for the emerging LGBTQ+ Health Program, as well as for other areas in the School of Medicine. They are also involved in many aspects of diversity, equity and inclusion work at Stanford, including work with the IDEAL initiative, with LGBTQ+ health in the School of Medicine, and as a member of several DEI committees within the Office of Development.

As a queer, non-binary trans person with the lived experience of mental illness, Beckett has dedicated much of their adult life to working and thinking at the intersections of mental health, gender identity, social justice, and health equity. All of their work, both personal and professional, is informed by an intersectional lens, and oriented toward the hope of a more just, equitable, and intersectional future for all people.

Beckett received their BA, with high honors, from Wesleyan University, where they studied social and political theory, history, and creative writing. Their academic research and writing has focused on environmental racism, health equity, and the state. They have published work on the philosopher Michel Foucault and have been the recipient of numerous grants and writing awards. In their free time, Beckett enjoys writing, reading, protesting, and cooking. Born and raised in the Bay Area, they currently live in Pacifica with their two cats.
