Getting Promoted

Counseling for Career Advancement
Annual Counseling is required for all members of the Professoriate and for all Clinical Assistant Professors and Clinical Associate Professors with an FTE of 50% or more. Your chair, division chief or designate should schedule a meeting with you annually. If they do not, it is the faculty member’s responsibility to request the meeting. Learn more

Promotion and Policy Workshops
Workshops for Clinician Educators and Professoriate faculty (UML, UTL and NTL faculty). Review past recordings and upcoming workshop on topics such as preparing for promotion to associate or full rank, the candidate role in the A&P process, professional development leave policies and procedures, and navigating your career. Learn more

Preparing for Reappointment or Promotion Review
As the primary stakeholder in the process, the faculty member should actively seek out information that will be of value and benefit in preparing for the reappointment or promotion review. The investment of time and effort in learning as much as possible about what is expected can pay dividends later. Learn more

How and Who Makes Decisions about Promotion
The process is multi-stage with different layers of decision-makers. These depend on the faculty line and the rank. Learn more.

Organizing Your CV and Candidate Statement
The curriculum vitae and candidate's statement are the faculty member's voice in their reappointment and promotion considerations. These documents are sent to internal and external referees, and they are included in the file that is reviewed by committees at the Department, School, and, for Professoriate, the University. Further information about getting promoted at the School of Medicine can be found in the Faculty section of the Office of Academic Affairs website, under Appointments and Promotions and under Policies and Guidelines.
