Stanford Emergency Medicine - Clinical Research Unit
(EM-CRU)

Founded in 2020, the Stanford Emergency Medicine Clinical Research Unit (EM-CRU) supports high-quality clinical trials and prospective studies in Stanford’s adult and pediatric emergency departments to advance the science of precision emergency medicine.

The EM-CRU supports both emergency medicine–focused investigations and multidisciplinary collaborations, helping guide patients from ED screening through enrollment and follow-up across a range of care settings.

To date, the EM-CRU has led 17 clinical research studies and enrolled more than 2,000 patients.

The EM-CRU team also includes departmental leadership, a clinical research manager, a project manager, and trained clinical research coordinators with expertise in emergency care research.

Dr. Youyou Duanmu, MD, MPH, faculty director is an emergency physician with expertise in quantitative methods who provides clinical and scientific leadership. Leonard Basobas, administrative director is a seasoned leader with nearly 30 years of operational experience in research management.

Research Facilities & Resources

Stanford Department of Emergency Medicine offers a strong research infrastructure that supports both industry-sponsored clinical trials and investigator-initiated studies involving pharmaceuticals, biomarkers, medical devices, and other emerging technologies.

Our two emergency departments provide access to a large and diverse patient population:

Adult ED: Over 80,000 visits annually at the Marc and Laura Andreessen Emergency Department

Pediatric ED: Over 30,000 visits annually, serving children from across the region and beyond

We care for some of the most critically ill and complex patients, with designations as a Level I Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center, Chest Pain Center, and Level 1 Geriatric ED (American College of Emergency Physicians).

The Pediatric ED is also recognized as a comprehensive pediatric emergency care center by Santa Clara County.

Our research is supported by 24/7 access to an Investigational Pharmacy and fully equipped laboratory resources, including -80°C storage for biosamples.
