EM Simulation Advanced Mentorship

The Stanford Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship is a two-year program designed to allow fellows to develop the skills necessary to be leaders in emergency medicine simulation.

Fellows serve as key faculty for ongoing faculty development, EM resident, and medical student simulation courses. They become adept at identifying the learning needs of numerous audiences, writing/implementing/evaluating cases, and debriefing all levels of learners.

Fellows also participate in leading team training sessions with surgeons, Ob/Gyn residents, nurses, etc. And they help run large-scale disaster simulations as well as in-situ simulations within the emergency department.

Fellows have opportunities to teach pediatric simulation; procedural simulation; faculty development simulation; and interdisciplinary simulation. Fellows gain experience utilizing mastery learning, virtual reality and rapid cycle deliberate practice.

Fellows are encouraged to create a course for an audience of their choice. Fellows coach our SimWars teams to excel in national and regional competitions. And, fellows  are encouraged to take advantage of annual simulation opportunities at Stanford, including national CME courses, university courses, interdisciplinary simulations, and more.

Our fellows are integrated into the state-of-the-art Center for Simulated and Immersive Learning (CISL), and have access to their Medical Education and Simulation journal series. In addition, fellows have access to faculty development courses, including the CISL Simulation instructor courses, the Stanford Health Professions Education and Scholarship (SHAPES) program, a teaching seminar series, a teaching seminar series specifically for interdisciplinary fellow learners, and more. A fellow development fund covers the cost of courses, presentations and/or national memberships.

Clinical

The Simulation Fellow's salary is covered by working in the Stanford emergency department with a Stanford University appointment as a Clinical Instructor, providing attending physician care. Stanford Hospital is part of a world-renowned medical center and home to a Level I trauma center with aero-medical transport.

Fellows provide attending physician coverage in the Stanford Adult ED and may provide coverage in the Stanford Children’s ED. The diverse, high aculty patient populations at Stanford and Stanford Children’s challenge fellows to continue mastering clinical skills. The expected clinical work obligation is 16-20 hours per week in the ED.

Educational

Participation in residency and departmental activities is required, providing fellows the opportunity to improve academic, teaching, and presenting skills. This includes resident and medical student education, both within the Stanford ED and at core lectures, as well as faculty development activities offered by the University and the ED faculty.

Fellows lecture regularly on simulation-related topics at the Stanford-Kaiser Emergency Medicine residency program conferences, and may be invited to present at other meetings both locally and at a national level.

Fellows are encouraged to attend the Society for Simulation in Healthcare annual international meeting, and are expected to participate in a regional simulation journal club.

Research

 The Simulation Fellow has protected time to develop and execute a research agenda that is based on individual interests. The Director of the Simulation Fellowship, Dr. Kimberly Schertzer, has years of experience in teaching, simulation research, and resident direction and will closely mentor the fellow. There is an expectation that the fellow will have a publishable manuscript and experience with grant submissions by the end of the fellowship. Multiple forms of scholarly work are encouraged and mentored.

Master's Degree

Fellows are strongly encouraged to complete a Master's degree during their fellowship years. Simulation fellows may choose from a number of Master's in Healthcare Simulation or  Master's in Health Professions Education programs to augment their education. Other Master's degree programs may be considered if they support a fellow’s overall career goals.

Fellows combine clinical shifts in an academic teaching hospital with didactics. 

• Fellows are required to work 8 shifts per month (approximately 15 hours per week) as Attending Physician in the emergency department (ED) at Stanford University Hospital, with an academic appointment of Clinical Instructor in the Clinician Educator Line at Stanford University. 
• While attending in the ED, fellows supervise residents and medical students. 
• Clinical time is spent at Stanford University Hospital which is a world-renowned medical center.  It is a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric trauma center with aero-medical transport. The diverse and high acuity patient population provides an excellent opportunity to continue to master clinical skills.  
• All fellows must be ABEM board certified/eligible.

Eligibility

Board-eligible or board-certified emergency medicine physician from 4 year ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency programs or 3 year ACGME EM programs with minimum 1 year post-graduate experience. The deadline to apply is October 31.
