Fat Transfer

For the active lifestyle of the typical San Francisco Bay Area patient, a fat transfer can provide an alternative to more invasive 'full facelift'. In past decade it has been recognized that loss of facial volume is a key element of the aging process. Part of this volume loss is due to loss of fat. (Research by Dr. Most has shown the importance of the midface fat in facial expression and possible changes in the malar/cheek fat pad with age).

The result of this is the realization that restoration of volume is beneficial and indeed necessary in some patients. The areas of volume loss include many areas of the face, such as the cheek, areas around the mouth, lower lids, etc.

The restoration of a youthful, natural look is the goal.

The Procedure

Typically, a small amount of fat is harvested from one of several possible sites (for example, the lower abdomen or thigh). The fat is purified and then injected into the face to replace lost volume. The procedure can be done under 'twilight' anesthesia or completely asleep. Dr. Most can help you decide which type of anesthesia would work best for you.

Patients may expect 7-10 days of swelling in the injected areas with some mild bruising.
