Dr. Sam Most

Specializing in Plastic Surgery of the Head and Neck

Dr. Most is a highly trained specialist in aesthetic plastic surgery of the head and neck. His training has included facial cosmetic surgery, complex reconstruction after head & neck cancer resection, and craniofacial trauma reconstruction. His specialization in plastic surgery of the head and neck allows him to concentrate on delivering the most up-to-date techniques to his patients.  He is a leader in the field, having treated thousands of patients, trained hundreds of doctors, taught internationally, and led humanitarian efforts domestically and abroad.  His efforts have been recognized by his peers with multiple national awards.

 

Academic Excellence at All Levels

Dr. Most graduated with High Honors from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. At Stanford University School of Medicine he received a prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute Grant and was honored with the Dean's Award upon graduation. He completed an internship in General Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine before returning to the West Coast. Upon his return, he trained at the University of Washington in the nationally renowned Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, where he received the Lampkin Temporal Bone Dissection Award in 1998, and the awards from the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO) in 1997, 1998, and 1999. In 2000 he joined the Physicians Research Training Committee of the ARO, its youngest member ever. After residency, he was selected for one of the most competitive fellowships in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has since served as Chief of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at both the University of Washington (2002-2006) and Stanford University (2006-present).  He has authored numerous articles, textbook chapters and reviews on the science and practice of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Most recently, Dr. Most was elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America from 2007 to the present, as well as Castle Connolly Best Doctors. He was recognized for both “Best Rhinoplasty” and “Best Facelift” by local publications in the San Francisco Bay Area.  He has received both the Ben Shuster Award (2003) and the Mark Rafaty Award (2014) in recognition of his contributions to the field of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

His accomplishments are not limited to the clinical practice of medicine. His basic research on nerve cell death (in the laboratory of Dr. Edwin Rubel) has been presented at national and international meetings. His most recent work has been recognized by publication in leading peer-reviewed basic science journals. He is interested in translating his neuroscience research into treatment for facial nerve injury.

 

A Leader in Facial Plastic Surgery

Dr. Most is proud of his specialization in Facial Plastic Surgery, and is actively involved in advancing the specialty. He has organized a nationally acclaimed course in Facial Plastic Surgery each fall at both the University of Washington and at Stanford University for the past 14 years. Here, physicians in Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Facial Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Dermatology all gather to attend lectures and lab sessions led by Dr. Most and his fellow counterparts from around the U.S. and Canada. He has already trained many physicians in the art and practice of Facial Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Most is regularly invited to lecture at national and international meetings in Facial Plastic Surgery. He has authored numerous articles and textbook chapters on facial plastic surgery. He co-authored the Aging Face Surgery/Dissection Manual (2004, AAFPRS press) and is regularly invited as a guest faculty at the nationally recognized courses, such as the Portland Rhinoplasty Course, the AAFPRS Aging Face Course (chair in 2012 and 2014), the Multidisciplinary Mid-Winter Facial Plastic Surgery Meeting (chair in 2009) as well as the Multidisciplinary Foundation Facial Plastic Surgery Course (Las Vegas, 2008 & 12), to name a few. Internationally, he has lectured in China, New Zealand, Canada, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Cambodia and Iran, to name a few.

As a member of Face to Face, a humanitarian group within the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Most works on improving the lives of those less fortunate both at home and abroad.  Dr. Most is an advocate for treatment of victims of domestic violence.  In addition, Dr. Most regularly leads humanitarian missions to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  On these missions, he and a team of doctors, nurses and other volunteers treat children and adults with congenital and acquired injuries of the face and neck, including cleft lip/palate, microtia, cancer defects, facial paralysis, and traumatic injuries.  The goal of these missions is not only to treat those in need, but to help establish training for the next generation of doctors in Phnom Penh.  He plans to begin missions in other countries as well.
