Office of the Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer
Achieving inclusive excellence and health equity at Stanford Medicine and beyond
What We Do
The Office of the Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer (CEDIO) collaborates with academic and administrative departments, the Stanford Medicine Diversity Cabinet, and executive leadership teams across Stanford Medicine and Stanford University to accelerate progress on goals, strategies, and tactics related to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and health equity. Through this inclusive and collaborative process, the Office of the CEDIO leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of enterprise-wide diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and health equity strategies aligned with Stanford Medicine’s tripartite mission.
In September 2022, Joyce Sackey, MD, FACP, became Stanford Medicine’s inaugural chief equity, diversity, and inclusion officer, reporting directly to Lloyd Minor, MD, dean of the Stanford School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs for Stanford University; David Entwistle, president and CEO of Stanford Health Care; and Paul King, president and CEO of Stanford Medicine Children’s Health.

Inclusive Excellence and Health Equity Strategic Plan
The Office of the CEDIO has developed the Stanford Medicine Inclusive Excellence and Health Equity Strategic Plan. The plan, which emphasizes engagement with individuals and teams across Stanford Medicine, has three strategic focus areas
Diversity
Achieve parity for underrepresented groups by requiring a bold, active, and dedicated effort.
Culture
Foster a culture of belonging at Stanford Medicine, where every individual feels seen, heard, and valued.
Health Equity
Creating and maintaining a vibrant, successful, and inclusive academic environment demands best-in-class programs, designed to support the diverse people who make up Stanford Medicine, from students and postdoctoral scholars, to faculty, staff, residents, and more.
Building upon our shared learnings and the foundational work of the Commission for Justice and Equity, which was created as an institution-wide, collaborative effort to dismantle systemic racism and discrimination within our own community and beyond, we will continue to make the needs of our diverse community our top priority.
Aligning for Impact
In January 2024, Stanford Medicine held its first institution-wide Health Equity Symposium, which focused on improving the health of marginalized populations and identifying ways to tackle health disparities. The goal of the event is to build community and strengthen connections by bringing together equity-focused educators, researchers, and practitioners across numerous disciplines.
