The mission of the Stanford Medicine Skin of Color Program is to advance health and address gaps in access, diagnosis, treatment, representation, trust, and inclusion through innovation and collaboration in four key domains:

Clinical Care

All Are Welcome

Our clinic is designed to provide culturally sensitive, patient-centered dermatologic care tailored to the unique needs of individuals across all skin tones, hair textures, and backgrounds. We serve patients at our Redwood City, Santa Clara, Castro Valley, and Emeryville locations.

We care for patients with the full spectrum of skin conditions and place special emphasis on partnering with our patients to deliver evidence-based diagnostic and treatment recommendations that are informed by their backgrounds, lived experiences and cultural practices. Individuals of all skin tones, hair textures, and backgrounds have a welcoming home here to seek expert, compassionate and inclusive dermatologic care.

We Treat:

  • Skin discoloration: hyperpigmentation (dark spots), hypopigmentation (light spots), melasma, vitiligo, and post-inflammatory skin changes
  • Alopecia (hair loss)
  • Keloids
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Pseudofolliculitis barbae
  • Acne keloidalis nuchae
  • Sarcoidosis
  • And many more conditions

 

Cosmetic Treatments for Patients with Darker Skin Tones:

  • Chemical peels
  • Laser hair removal
  • Facial rejuvination with other laser treatments
  • Neurotoxins
  • Fillers
  • DPN/Skin tag/seborrheic keratosis removal

Teaching

Our faculty work with resident physicians and trainees to teach the next generation of dermatologists. We provide clinical training and lectures for trainees, faculty, and staff to improve medical knowledge and cultural sensitivity. We also host visiting medical students and residents who are interested in additional training.

Community Engagement

We volunteer at events in our local communities to build trust and improve health. We also advocate for our patients' interests in California and in Washington, DC.

Research

We conduct clinical, translational, and machine-learning studies to advance health and healthcare access for conditions that impact underserved communities, including hidradenitis suppurativa, acne, and melanoma.

Our Faculty

Leandra A. Barnes, MD, FAAD

Instructor of Dermatology and Founding Director of the Stanford Medicine Skin of Color Program

Specializes in acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, and other follicular occlusive disorders like acne keloidalis, dissecting cellulitis of the scalp, and pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Andrea Hinton, MD, FAAD

Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology

Specializes in alopecia (hair loss).

Saisindhu Narala, MD, MAS, FAAD

Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology

Specializes in pigmentary disorders, vitiligo, and post-inflammatory skin changes.

Nour Kibbi, MD, FAAD

Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology

Specializes in dermatologic surgery and laser and aesthetic interventions across skin tones.

Zakia Rahman, MD, FAAD

Clinical Professor of Dermatology and Director of the Resident Laser and Aesthetic Clinic

Specializes in laser and aesthetic interventions across skin tones.
