Pediatric Clinical Fellowships

Clinical Pediatrics Fellowship

The Pediatric Dermatology Clinical Fellowship at Stanford University is a 1-year program in which trainees gain expertise in providing high-quality patient care, teaching, and generating new knowledge.  Graduates from our program will excel at providing tertiary-level outpatient care and inpatient consultative services for children with complex skin disorders and will also be effective educators of students, residents and other health providers, and have the foundation to launch a career in clinical or translational research.  This program is accredited by the ACGME.

Program Objectives

The goal of the Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship is to train future leaders in pediatric dermatology through experiences in patient care, teaching, and clinical or translational research.  The specific objectives of the program are outlined below.

To develop expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of both common and uncommon pediatric skin diseases.

80% of the fellowship is spent in clinical patient care activities.   All clinical care is within the field of pediatric dermatology.  In addition to general pediatric dermatology clinic, we have specialty clinics in Vascular Anomalies, Epidemolysis Bullosa, Rheumatology/Dermatology, and Genetic Skin Diseases.  Laser (vascular, pigment, ablative) and ambulatory surgeries are also parts of our clinical practice.

To develop clinical and didactic teaching skills

Fellows are expected to teach residents and medical students in clinic.  In addition, fellows give two lectures in pediatric dermatology to the Lucile Packard Pediatric Residency Program and two lectures to the Stanford dermatology residents.

To provide an understanding of clinical and translational research in pediatric dermatology.

Fellows participate in the Intensive Course for Clinical Research which is held each fall and sponsored by SPCTRM (Stanford/Packard Center for Translational Research in Medicine).  Fellows are mentored by faculty and are encouraged to develop academic projects.  Fellows may be involved in on-going investigator-initiated or industry-sponsored clinical studies as well.

To foster scholarship in pediatric dermatology.

Fellows are encouraged to attend and participate in local and national meetings, such as the Annual Meeting of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology.  Fellows are also expected to generate at least two academic publications during their fellowship.

Facilities

Fellows are trainees in the Department of Dermatology at Stanford University.  Patient care takes place at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.  The pediatric dermatology service sees patients every day of the week and has over 6,000 outpatient visits per year.

Faculty

Division of Pediatric Dermatology has close interactions with the Department of Dermatology at Stanford that has over 70 teaching faculty.

Supervision and Evaluation of Fellows

All patient care activities are supervised by the faculty.  Mentorship on teaching and research or other academic endeavors will also be provided.  Formal evaluation and reviews with program director will occur quarterly.  The goals of these meetings are to discuss the fellow’s progress,  career goals and provide feedbacks.  Additional meetings may be scheduled depending on the needs and performance of the fellow.

Application Process

Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in medicine and have completed an ACGME-accredited dermatology residency program prior to the start of their fellowship.  Applicants should either have an active license or be eligible for a California medical license.

Prior training in Pediatrics is preferred, but not mandatory.  We participate in the fellowship match administered by San Francisco Match.  One to two fellows per year will be selected. The interviews are usually conducted from November to the beginning of March of the following year.
