StanfordMed Pulse: Celebrating American Heart Month

StanfordMed Pulse
January 31, 2023

Dear Community,

As we begin American Heart Month this week, we want to thank the clinicians, scientists, trainees, and staff across Stanford Medicine who work tirelessly to prevent, treat, and research heart disease. The innovative research you conduct and the compassionate care you provide are saving lives and driving new advances in heart health.

Stanford Medicine has a storied history of innovation in cardiovascular care, including the first successful human heart transplant performed by Norman Shumway, MD, PhD, in 1968. We are immensely proud of those who carry on this legacy today — from researchers working to diversify enrollment in clinical trials for heart disease to the clinicians who care for the heart health of more than 250,000 patients annually across our facilities.

We also know that, despite significant advances in prevention and treatment, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and globally. The world needs visionary leaders in this ongoing fight. To that end, we are grateful that Stanford Cardiovascular Institute director Joseph Wu, MD, PhD, will begin a one-year term in July as president of the American Heart Association, where he will drive global research efforts to support better heart health for all.

Please join us in celebrating the thousands of people at Stanford Medicine and beyond who are dedicated to excellence in cardiovascular research, education, and patient care. And we encourage you to visit Stanford Health Care’s Food for Heart page for resources on how to lower heart disease risk for you and your loved ones.

Sincerely,
