StanfordMed Pulse: A Message from the Leaders

StanfordMed Pulse
January 31, 2022

Dear Community,

On the eve of American Heart Month, we want to express our deep gratitude to all those at Stanford Medicine working to prevent, treat, and better understand heart disease. The exemplary care and innovative research emerging from our community continues to benefit patients around the world.

Stanford has a long history as a leader in cardiac care, including Dr. Norman Shumway’s historic first successful human heart transplant in 1968, and that proud tradition continues to this day. Last August, Stanford Health Care was designated as one of the top 10 U.S. hospitals for mitral valve repair surgery by the American Heart

Association and Mitral Foundation. Just a few months later, Stanford Children’s Health celebrated its 500th pediatric heart transplant — a milestone that recognizes the Pediatric Transplant Center’s national preeminence.

At the same time, Stanford researchers have greatly expanded our knowledge of cardiovascular disease, including a major new study analyzing the benefits of stents compared to bypass surgery. Another recent study demonstrates how obtaining a more diverse pool of patient data can substantially improve the prediction of cholesterol risk. And three Stanford physician-scientists are launching first-in-human trials of stem cells to treat heart failure and stroke. These are just a sampling of the extraordinary work that contributes to Stanford Medicine’s excellence in cardiac care.

Though heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, we are optimistic that our community’s outstanding Precision Health efforts will usher in a better and healthier future for patients everywhere.

Sincerely,
