Nguyen Selected as Associate Editor of CTSNet Residents Section

Dr. Tom C. Nguyen, Stanford General Surgery Resident, has been selected as the Associate Editor of the Residents Section of CTSNet, the leading online resource of educational and scientific research information for cardiothoracic surgeons. In 2010, his position will be elevated to that of Editor when Nguyen begins his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship.

Nguyen’s job responsibilities, along with newly appointed Editor, Dr. Michael Halkos, a cardiothoracic surgery fellow from Emory University, loosely include:

• oversight of the entire Residents Section on CTSNet
• representation of CTSNet to the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association (TSRA), and
• collaboration with other resident organizations worldwide.

Nguyen brings to CTSNet extensive experience with web design. While at Stanford, he created several educational and academic websites, including http://scalpel.stanford.edu, which has become a focal point for the Stanford General Surgery Residency Program. He also brings an interest in academic cardiothoracic surgery, having spent three years in the cardiovascular laboratory of Dr. D. Craig Miller, Thelma and Henry Doelger Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery and AATS President.

Nguyen reflects that “these were some of the best years of my life, allowing me to mature and develop my critical thinking skills.”  In Dr. Miller’s lab, Nguyen examined the role of strain perturbations as an early marker of left ventricular dysfunction in chronic mitral regurgitation.  Also as a surgery resident, Nguyen created a pocket surgery handbook, entitled “Practical Guide to the Care of the Surgical Patient: Pocket Scalpel,” which will be published and distributed by Elsevier Inc. in November 2008.
