Didactic Lectures

Fellow's CCM Didactic Conference

Weekly conference taught by Medical School faculty (CCM faculty and other invited subspecialty faculty) for the fellows in training. Topics covered include those proscribed by the ABA and ABIM for comprehensive training in Critical Care Medicine.

CCM Journal Club Conference

Monthly meeting where one of the fellows delivers a formal presentation of an important journal article and appropriate critique.  Enlightening discussion between attendings and fellows is a highlight of this educational event.

  • When: Monthly on a Tuesday
  • Where: Zoom (Quarterly at the Stanford Faculty Club with dinner)
  • Time: 12 – 1 pm (evenings if held at Stanford Faculty Club)

Mortality/Morbidity Conference

Fellows on service at the Stanford Medical-Surgical ICU present morbidity and mortality data from the current block rotation. The fellow incorporates skills learned through the quality improvement training including root cause analysis, fishbone diagrams, and needs assessments to improve patient care at Stanford Hospital. Key teaching points and a case presentation are provided to enhance the education of the MSICU teams (residents, students, fellows, and attendings).

Critical Care Ultrasound (CCUS)

Didactic series with 16+ multidisciplinary lecturers from critical care, cardiac anesthesia, and cardiology. Progressive curriculum modeled after the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) content outline and international consensus statements on CCUS core competencies. Lectures will begin with a focus on the cognitive skills expected of all graduating Stanford CCM fellows to enable clinical diagnosis and management in the critical care setting. In the second half of the year, lectures will transition to advanced CCUS concepts aimed at comprehensive and quantitative hemodynamic evaluation as well as case studies.

CCM Specialty Conference

CCM Specialty Conferences include a number of lectures such as Wellness Sessions, Combined BMT/ICU M&M, Leadership & Professionalism talks and a multitude of other educational lectures.

CCM Fellowship Workshops

Introductory workshops in various aspects of CCM, including Airway skills (basic and advanced; including LMA, Aintree rescue, surgical airway techniques, etc.), Ultrasound Vascular Access (venous and arterial access including femoral/axillary sites, and use of needle guides with ultrasound), and Critical Care Focused Ultrasound, TTE and TEE. Educational techniques include task trainers, mannequins, simulation, and human models. A basic introductory workshop at the beginning of the year is provided and boot camp workshops are conducted throughout the year.

Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine Conferences

Stanford University Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine hosts a variety of educational conferences. Most notably the fellowship didactic lecture series and PCCM Grand Round lecture series which provide additional learning opportunities for the CCM fellows.

  • When: PCCM Conferences are held Monday and Wednesday, weekly.  PCCM Grand Rounds are held Friday, weekly.
  • Where: Varies per lecture, refer to emails sent out by coordinators.
  • Time: PCCM Conferences and Grand Rounds are held 1 – 2 pm.

 

Resident Didactic ICU Conference

Basic CCM topics are presented by our CCM faculty or fellows to the residents/students on the rotation. Fellows may attend to learn basics as well as to appreciate different faculty styles of instruction, use of instructional media, audience participation, oral delivery and unique ways of dealing with the subject matter. Fellows are encouraged to develop several of their own lectures on basic topics relevant to CCM during their fellowship and formative feedback on teaching skills will be provided.

Emergency Medicine/Critical Care Medicine Conference

August 20, 2008, marked the beginning of the first monthly joint conference with the Emergency Medicine department and is indicative of the ongoing evolution and cross-bridging between these two specialties. This conference is the brainchild of Dr. Tsuyoshi Mitarai (Stanford CCM #119).
