Mommy Makeover

What is a Mommy Makeover?

The Mommy Makeover surgery entails a combination of different surgeries. Each Mommy Makeover is tailored to the patient’s preferences. A mommy makeover can include any combination of the following: Tummy Tuck, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Liposuction, and Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery. Traditionally, the standard Mommy Makeover entails a Tummy tuck and breast augmentation. Each procedure and their respectuve details are outlined below.

The Procedure

Tummy Tuck

More often than not, pregnancy confers permanent changes to a woman’s body. A typical pregnancy entails a large fluctuation in weight over a short period of time (9 months). The degree of enlargement of the uterus may be significant enough to cause irreversible stretching of the Linea Alba, a connective tissue structure that runs through the middle of your six-pack muscle. This pathology is called diastasis recti and the amount of stretching correlates with increased girth of your abdomen. The increased girth cannot be corrected with diet and exercise. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, must be performed to address this issue.

Along with a fairly rapid increase in abdominal girth from pregnancy, followed by weight loss, many women develop sagging abdominal tissue and skin along their lower abdomen. Additionally, pregnancy often causes tears in the deeper layers of the skin, manifesting as stretch marks. These are irreversible and no topical cream or laser have been proven effective under academic scrutiny. With time, the deep red or violet color of the stretch marks lighten and usually become less noticeable. Regardless, it is undesirable for many women and the only way to actually remove them is by excision. An abdominoplasty removes the skin and underlying fatty tissue of your lower abdomen, and this is where the majority of pregnancy-related stretch marks develop. You may experience significant reduction in the number of visible stretch marks on your abdomen after a tummy tuck.

Because an abdominoplasty removes excess skin and results in an overall tightening effect on your abdomen, subsequent weight gain will create additional irreversible damage to your remaining abdominal skin and essentially reverse the abdominoplasty results. Thus, it is recommended that you are at a stable weight and have not experienced significant weight fluctuations for at least 6 months prior to undergoing an abdominoplasty.

Breast Augmentation

Due to fluctuating hormone levels and changes in your weight during pregnancy and breast feeding, your breast skin envelope may stretch resulting in breasts that appear slightly more deflated than prior to pregnancy. A breast augmentation increases the fullness, size, and symmetry of your breasts. The procedure is typically performed with the insertion of silicone or saline implants.

Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that reduces the breast skin envelope and repositions the areola and nipple to a more naturally anatomical location. It does not involve any removal of breast tissue, and can be performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that permanently removes unwanted fat in stubborn areas. The fat is removed through suction technology and is an excellent way to achieve a tailored silhouette that is impossible to obtain through diet and exercise alone. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. The fat removed contributes to improving the contour of the target area—you do not lose a substantial amount of weight from this procedure.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

Vaginal rejuvenation surgery entails several different surgeries to improve the shape, size, and function of your vaginal area. These procedures help to restore the soft tissue structures that may have been causing you discomfort and embarrassment. Additionally, vaginal deliveries may result in widening of the vaginal canal that can be narrowed with vaginal rejuvenation surgery.

Vaginal rejuvenation includes clitoral hood reduction, labiaplasty, labia majoraplasty, monsplasty, and vaginoplasty.
