Surgical Metrics Project at ACS Clinical Congress 2022
The Surgical Metrics Project is a collaboration between the T.E.C.I center, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The Clinical Congress will take place October 17-19, 2022 in the Exhibit Hall of the San Diego Convention Center. The project gives surgeon participants the opportunity to use wearable technology to digitize their surgical actions and decisions and then compare their approaches to those included in a database of master surgeons.

Project RADAR at AUA 2022
Project Surgical RADAR uses the latest in simulation technology to help urological surgeons do just that. Inspired by the TECI Center and American College of Surgeons’ Surgical Metrics Project, Project Surgical RADAR, which stands for Robust AI-generated Data-driven Assessment of Robotic skills, uses a realistic physical platform that simulates a very complex part of a radical prostatectomy procedure that involves sparing the nerves responsible for preserving erectile function.

Dr. Pugh spoke at Exponential Medicine 2019 where she discussed the lack of standardization when it comes to what a surgeon does with their hands. In her talk, Dr. Pugh described the potential uses for sensor technology to capture what surgeons do with their hands and instruments to accurately measure performance and provide feedback.

Along with several other research teams, the T.E.C.I. Center received seed grand funding from Stanford’s Presence Center and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on the topic of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: Inclusion & Equity. The Presence Mini Summit brought grantees together to share their research. Cassidi Goll of the T.E.C.I. Center presented the research insights from the project titled “Promoting Breast Health Awareness and Community Based Conversations: Can Haptic-AI Technology Help?” Overall, the event fostered a synergetic environment, allowing attendees to form collaborations for future work.

8th Annual Breast Cancer and African Americans Conference

The T.E.C.I. Center team had the great privilege of conducting a data collection at the 8th Annual Breast Cancer and African Americans Conference in May 2019. This uniquely designed community educational event is organized by Pamela Ratliff at the Stanford Cancer Institute. The conference is committed to raising awareness about breast cancer in African Americans throughout the Greater San Francisco Bay Area in an effort to reduce health disparities among our most vulnerable and medically underserved populations. Aiming to promote breast self-awareness, the T.E.C.I. Center team used their breast exam simulators to collect both quantitative sensor data and qualitative survey data from attendees of the conference.

Med School 101 brings Bay Area high school students to the Stanford campus for sessions on a variety of medical and scientific topics taught by some of the country's top experts. During the daylong program, students attend lectures and interactive courses, participate in a virtual anatomy class and other hands-on activities, and learn what it's like to be a real medical student. Dr. Pugh gave the welcoming address to the MedSchool 101 attendees.

Students from San Francisco State University’s Promoting Inclusivity in Computing (PINC) and Google’s Tech Exchange Program visited the TECI Center for an interactive presentation about our research initiatives.

Lecture at Google Tech Exchange Program
Sunnyvale, CA
Google has partnered with seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to create a Tech Exchange Program to provide students with computer science internships at Google headquarters in California. The participating HBCUs are Howard University, Florida A&M University, Morgan State University, Prairie View A&M University, North Carolina A&T University, Dillard University, and Spelman College.
The program provides students with computer science courses on a number of different subjects such as machine learning, product management, computational theory, and database systems. The classes will be taught by HBCU professors and Google engineers. Additionally, the students will get to meet Google software engineers from different product areas to learn more about the various positions within the company. Learn more here.

Incubator for Medical Mixed and Extended Reality at Stanford (IMMERS) Open House
Stanford University
Incubator for Medical Mixed and Extended Reality at Stanford (IMMERS) is an initiative to enable medical applications of MR and extended reality (XR), particularly those where patient data (images, measurements, interventional plans) are projected onto the patient’s body. IMMERS aims to bring together researcher and physicians primarily in the Schools of Medicine and Engineering, but across the entire Stanford campus and work with industry partners to envision, enable and enact solutions to real challenges in healthcare. Data Collection at American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meeting
San Francisco, CA
In October 2018, the TECI team held a major performance data event at the annual American Society of Anesthesiology Annual Meeting. During this meeting over 130 anesthesiologists volunteered to be instrumented with sensors and perform two simulated intubations (normal patient & critically burned patient). Sensors on the manikin, physicians and their instruments enabled digital documentation of a variety of approaches to intubation.
