Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) is our primary teaching site. Residents rotate through our outpatient clinic rotation, surgery rotation, oncology rotation, and hybrid inpatient consult-dermatopathology rotation throughout their three years of residency training. On the outpatient clinic rotation at Redwood City and the oncology rotation at the Stanford Cancer Institute our residents rotate through a large variety of specialty clinics, including bullous disease, contact dermatitis, hair disorders, nail disorders, and supportive onco-dermatology in addition to many high volume general dermatology clinics. In addition, several of the specialty clinics our residents rotate through are multidisciplinary, including the pigmented lesion and melanoma clinic, Merkel cell clinic, cutaneous lymphoma clinic, rheumatology-dermatology and autoimmune skin disease clinics. The residents are supervised by 1-2 faculty in these clinics. At the Stanford Cancer Institute there are additional APPs (nurse practitioners and physicians assistants) working alongside the residents. In addition, we have faculty site directors at the Redwood City and main campus sites to liaise between the residents/residency program and the staff/faculty at each site. The SHC rotations are the foundation of our residency program and provide an exceptional breadth and depth of clinical exposure for our trainees in the field of general dermatology, procedural dermatology, dermatopathology and unique specialty clinics covering complex medical dermatology.
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center
Diverse patient population including Hispanic, Asian, African American, and uninsured patients; exposure to rare infectious diseases including leprosy. Mostly outpatient clinic encounters but also exposure to inpatient consults (with a higher proportion of severe cutaneous drug eruptions such as toxic epidermal necrolysis due to the burn unit at SCVMC), dermatopathology sessions approximately 2 hours/week, Dermatologic Surgery 2 half- day clinics/month, and genital dermatology clinic 1/2 day/week.
Lucille Packard Children's Hospital / Stanford Children's Health
Pediatric dermatology patient population. Mostly outpatient clinic encounters, with exposure to general pediatric dermatology, as well as multi-disciplinary subspecialty clinics including vascular anomalies, genetic skin diseases, epidermolysis bullosa, and rheumatology-dermatology. Residents gain exposure to procedural dermatology with a variety of surgical and laser procedures in pediatric patients, including treatment for vascular and pigmented lesions. In addition to outpatient clinical care, residents also rotate through the inpatient consultation service.
Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System
The Palo Alto VA is one of the four main teaching sites where our residents spend an average of 2 months of each year providing care to our nation's veterans. The vast majority of care is delivered in the general dermatology outpatient clinics, in addition to once a month melanoma and high risk non-melanoma skin cancer clinics. This rotation provides excellent exposure to skin cancer diagnosis and management, wound care and general medical dermatology. In addition, our residents get excellent hands-on learning opportunities in the two half day clinics/week of Dermatologic Surgery and additional dermatopathology exposure in two one-hour Dermatopathology clinical correlation conferences each week.
