Stanford Summer Research Experience for Community College Students (SSRECC)

This program is a joint  collaboration with the Center of Excellence in Diverstiy in Medical Education and the department of Pediatrics, focused on increasing the number of underrepresented minority, low income and first-generation college students who are committed to and well positioned for careers in the sciences and medicine.  The program will begin with weekly meetings aimed at preparing the selected applicants to transition to a full-time research internship (40 hours per week) in a lab with a Stanford faculty mentor from mid-June through August.

This Community College Science Internship Program promotes and nurtures science literacy, aptitude, and interest by providing talented and motivated community college URM students exposure to science  in an exciting, committed, supportive environment through mentorship and scholarly pursuit.

PROGRAM GOALS

·      Provide hands-on exposure to scientific research

-      Connect students with mentors who will assist them in their pursuit of scientific scholarship and education. Research interns will be exposed to various scientific experiences,  conducting either basic, behavioral or clinical research projects.

·      Improve communicty college transfer applications among students who might otherwise have more limited educational choices.

Participation in this internship program will help selectees create competitive research portfolios.

Students receive a $3,000 research stipend. The application deadline is April 30, 2019 . 

Applicants will be notified of selection decisions by May 10, and the program will begin on May 17, 2019.

Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP)

The Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP) targets current community college students considered low-income and/or underrepresented in medicine providing exposure to medicine and health through topics in health disparities, leadership challenges in health provision and administration, science success strategies, professional development, clinical exposure, successful preparation for the medical school application process, postsecondary and graduate/professional school financing. 

 

THE APPLICATION CYCLE FOR SUMMER 2019 HAS ENDED.

 

SSCCPP is currently offered as a six-week residential program, allowing  talented and motivated community college students interested in medicine to immerse themselves in the Stanford School of Medicine network through a variety of personal and professional development experiences. 

This program is designed to impact the San Francisco Bay area and its contiguous counties, promoting growth and diversity of the health workforce in the region. 

Participants are REQUIRED to reside on campus for the duration of the program and will be immersed in topic areas including:

Critical reading and research of medical literature 

Civic engagement, leadership, and political activism in medicine 

Science preparatory classes (previously anatomy, molecular cellular bio, chemistry) 

An introduction to the MCAT 

Academic success and test-taking strategies 

The medical school admissions  and financing process

 

Additional activities promote:

Peer networking 

Medical student mentorship 

Clinical shadowing and research opportunity education 

Application cycle: December 1, 2018 through March 30, 2018*
*Priority consideration given to applications submitted by February 28, 2019

Selectees will be awarded a scholarship that covers all program expenses including housing, meals, participation fees and materials.
