12th Annual Cardiology for the Primary Care Practitioner

A Continuing Medical Education Conference presented by the Department of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine) at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Statement of Need

This CME program seeks to enhance the knowledge and competence of primary care practitioners in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of several cardiovascular diseases and heart conditions. Interactive lectures and case presentations will be used to cover the latest updates and clinical information in congestive heart failure, dyslipidemia, mitral valve disease, syncope, EKG interpretation, cardiovascular disease during pregnancy, and post-TAVR management.  

Target Audience

This is a regional program designed for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants specializing in Cardiology, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Primary Care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Summarize the components of atypical EKG tracings that can be used to assess cardiovascular risk
  • Implement into practice recent updates and recommendations from the American College of Cardiology (ACC)/ American Heart Association (AHA)/ American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) guidelines on dyslipidemia management and cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention
  • Apply recommendations from the recently updated ACC/AHA/Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) guidelines when diagnosing and managing patients with heart failure
  • Develop treatment or referral plans for patients presenting with signs of mitral valve regurgitation
  • Apply recommendations and algorithms from the updated ACC/AHA/Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) guidelines for the initial evaluation and management of patients with syncope
  • Evaluate the available clinical evidence for recommendations for the management of cardiovascular disease during pregnancy
  • Assess recommendations for post-procedure management of patients who have undergone transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
