Practical Pediatrics – North Bay 2018

Statement of Need

Continuous advances in clinical science require pediatric and family physicians to obtain comprehensive, up-to-date information on a wide variety of clinical issues that may be encountered in daily pediatric practice. This course will focus on clinical management strategies of conditions in pediatric hematology, dermatology, obesity, ophthalmology, allergy, gender issues as well as such topics as short stature, abdominal pain and vaping/smoking e-cigarettes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:
Using best evidence and guidelines:

  • Develop strategies to treat iron deficiency anemia
  • Formulate a treatment plan for the child with eczema (atopic dermatitis) or psoriasis
  • Diagnose the child with food allergies and discuss treatment and diet options with parents
  • Conduct a detailed evaluation of the youth with suspected impaired growth to identify the cause and treat or refer the youth as appropriate
  • Counsel obese youth and their families on ways to improve their health and avoid co-morbidities that may result from childhood obesity
  • Counsel the patient and parents on the health risks of vaping or smoking e-cigarettes
  • Develop a strategy to evaluate, diagnose and treat/manage or refer the child or adolescent presenting with acute abdominal pain
  • Evaluate, treat and/or refer the patient who sustains trauma to the eye
  • Formulate a strategy to become familiar and comfortable with the various aspects of caring for the transgender youth
  • Identify health care practices or services where you can refer the transgender or gender nonconforming youth
