Stanford students have scheduling priority for all available clerkships. Visiting students will be considered for elective clerkships during each quarter's application acceptance period.  Only one clerkship is available for visiting student participation at this time. Note that eligibility requirements are subject to change without notice. 

Eligibility requirements prior to the start of an elective clerkship is currently based on the following:

1. The student must be in good academic standing and, at the time of the elective clerkship, will be registered in their 4th or final year in an MD or DO degree program at a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association.
   
2. The student must be covered by malpractice/liability insurance at a minimum level of $1,000,000 primary/$3,000,000 aggregate by the home school.  If the home school does not meet our minimum coverage, documentation of supplemental insurance will be required to fulfill our requirements. 
3. The student must be covered by personal health insurance during the time they will be participating in the elective clerkship.
4. The student has completed core clinical clerkships in Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery.
5. The student has passed Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination or the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners certifying exam.
6. The student has completed training for:
   1. *Bloodborne Pathogens within the past 12 months
   2. *Safety & Emergency Preparedness within the past 12 months 
   3. Has been certified for Basic Life Suport and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support within the past 2 years
   4. *It is acceptable if the home institution combines training in bloodborne pathogens and safety measures.  
   5. *Training topics include: 
      1. General Safety, IIPP, and Emergency Preparedness covers practices and procedures for preventing employee injury or illness from potential workplace hazards.  Appropriate for all employees and students in administrative and other work environments.
      2. Biosafety covers the safe use, handling, and disposal of biohazardous agents, and reviews emergency procedures for occupational injuries or biological material spills.     
7. The student has passed a criminal background check within the past 2 years. 
   1. Any basic criminal background check is acceptable.  Students have used online services if their home institution does not assist in providing one.      
8. The student has passed and can provide documentation of a Respiratory Mask Fit Test/Certification within 12 months prior to the end of the elective clerkship.  The test includes a measurement for mask size. Stanford University Hospital and Clinics stock 3M 1860 or 1860S type N95 disposable respirators.
   1. Summer Quarter 2024-25, no older than September 2023
   2. Autumn Quarter 2024-25, no older than December 2023
   3. Winter Quarter 2024-25, no older than April 2024
   4. Spring Quarter 2024-25, no older than June 2024
      
9. Proof of required immunizations and/or tests for medical clearance
   1. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 doses of live vaccines or laboratory evidence of immunity
   2. Varicella: 2 doses of live vaccines or laboratory evidence of immunity
   3. Hepatitis B: 3 doses of vaccine, or laboratory evidence of immunity from vaccination (Hepatitis Surface Antibody), or laboratory evidence of natural immunity (have had past hepatitis B infection).* This must include results for Hepatitis Surface Antibody, Hepatitis B Core Antibody and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen.
      • *Equivocal antibody titers are not considered sufficient to protect from infection. Complete vaccine series must be administered as recommended by the CDC-ACIP.
   4. Tdap (Tetanus+Diphtheria+Pertussis): Tdap booster (booster without Pertussis is not compliant), must be within past 10 years from the last day of the quarter
   5. Flu vaccine: Required seasonally October thru March (evidence of flu shot for 2024-2025 season)
   6. Tuberculin status:
      1. TB testing completed within 12 months prior to end of the clerkship, with laboratory evidence of negative QuantiFERON Gold or T-spot blood test.  PPD is not acceptable.
      2. If history of a positive TB skin or blood test, a chest x-ray completed within 12 months of start of clerkship accompanied by positive TB test results.
      3. Summer Quarter 2024-25
         1. Period 1 last day: July 28, 2024 (test results must be after July 28, 2023)
         2. Period 2 last day: August 25, 2024 (test results must be after August 25, 2023)
         3. Period 3 last day: September 22, 2024 (test results must be after September 22, 2023)          
      4. Autumn Quarter 2024-25
         1. Period 4 last day: October 20, 2024 (test results must be after October 20, 2023)
         2. Period 5 last day: November 17, 2024 (test results must be after November 17, 2023)
         3. Period 6 last day: December 15, 2024 (test results must be after December 15, 2023)     
            
      5. Winter Quarter 2024-25
         1. Period 7 last day: February 2, 2025 (test results must be after February 2, 2024)
         2. Period 8 last day: March 2, 2025 (test results must be after March 2, 2024)
         3. Period 9 last day: March 30, 2025 (test results must be after March 30, 2024) 
            
      6. Spring Quarter 2024-25
         1. Period 10 last day: April 27, 2025 (test results must be after April 27, 2024)
         2. Period 11 last day: May 25, 2025 (test results must be after May 25, 2024)
         3. Period 12 last day: June 22, 2025 (test results must be after June 22, 2024) 
10. If the student will be participating in a clerkship that takes place at a Veterans Administration (VA) hospital site, the student will be required to comply with the following requirements set by the VA:
    1. Evidence or self-certification that they are physically and mentally fit to perform the essential functions of the training program; 
    2. Evidence or self-certification of up-to-date vaccinations for healthcare workers as recommended by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and VA
    3. Evidence of tuberculosis screening and testing per CDC health care personnel guidelines
    4. Identification documents to meet VA security requirements
    5. Results of screening against the Health and Human Services’ List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE)
    6. Trainees who were born male and who are US citizens, immigrants to the US, or are otherwise required by law to register, have registered with the Selective Service System
    7. Trainees who are non-US citizens:  
       1. Have current immigrant, non-immigrant, exchange visitor or other documentation stating that they are eligible to live and work in the US
          1. Appropriate documents can be provided and could include permanent resident card, employment authorization document Form I-766, visas: J-1, J‑2, H-1B, H-4, E-3, or DS-2019
       2. Have been issued a US social security number
11. Payment must be received for the non-refundable $200 application fee. Instructions for paying the fee will be sent via email at the time visiting students are scheduled, separate from the acceptance notification.
