If you will be participating in a clerkship that takes place in Stanford Hospital and/or Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, instructions for picking up your Stanford Medicine photo ID badge will be sent to your Stanford email address from the Office of Medical Student Affairs. 

Badges are not distributed before the first day of clerkships. If you have made arrangements to start your clerkship on a different day than what was listed on your acceptance notification, contact your clerkship coordinator for badge pick up instructions.

Any other non-Stanford Medicine security badge information will be provided by the clerkship coordinator.

If you will be participating in a clerkship that takes place in Stanford Hospital and/or Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, the COVID-19 vaccine status stickers are part of Stanford Medicine’s vaccination requirement program.

After obtaining your Stanford Medicine photo ID badge, follow the instructions provided by the Office of Medical Student Affairs and visit the sticker distribution kiosk.

If you requested a Stanford University Campus Card (different from the Stanford Medicine hospital photo ID badge), follow the instructions on the Campus Card Services website to obtain your card.

For specific clerkships, if you have not been scrub trained, you will be required to complete scrub training at Stanford on the first day of your clerkship.

Instructions for completing your scrub training, if applicable, will be sent to your Stanford email address 3-4 weeks prior to the clerkship start date. Any questions can be sent to surgeryclerkship@stanford.edu.

Per Stanford University policy, visiting medical students are not granted remote access to patient data.

Therefore, while on the SHC or LPCH premises, after you are connected to the network, you can call for your temporary password. SHC EPIC and LPCH EPIC systems are accessed separately.

For detailed instructions, refer to the on-boarding information that was sent to your Stanford email address from the Office of Medical Student Affairs prior to the clerkship start date. When you are physically located at the hospital and able to connect to the network, you will call the provided phone number(s) to request your username and password.

For LPCH, it is strongly recommended that you use specific wording, such as, "I am a Stanford medical student and I need my username and password." Be prepared to give them an identifier, such as the last four digits of your SSN. 

After you receive your username/S-ID and password, you will be able to log on to the EPIC system. Enter your S-ID followed by @enterprise.stanfordmed.org in the Enterprise ID field.

Clerkship coordinators will send information regarding other clerkship site access as needed.

If you would like access to the Voalte paging system used by clinical departments, go to https://stanfordhc.service-now.com/esm, select “Request Services” at the top, select “Access” in the side menu on the left, then select Access Request. You can also call the Service Desk (650-723-3333) and ask them to submit the request on your behalf.

If you are stuck by a needle or splashed with bloody fluid follow the 1-STIX (1-7849) protocol.

1. If sharps injury: Wash skin with soap/water x 15 minutes If eyes: Flush with 500cc lactated Ringers or normal saline; If mouth/ nose: Flush with water x 15 minutes
2. Activate 1-STIX Pager for OHS BBP Advice RN (24/7/365)
   1. Page Operator (650) 723-6661: Ask for 1-STIX pager (17849)
3. Obtain Source Patient's Blood by cooperating with site hospital personnel:
   1. Name/MRN/Unit Location/ HIV, HBV, HCV status
   2. Follow-up services may be advised by OHS BBP RN for testing at University Services at 484 Oak Rd (650) 735-5308 or in the basement of 300P.

Should a student experience a needle stick, they are advised to call the Needlestick Hotline regardless of where the incident occurs. If immediate emergency medical treatment is deemed necessary (sutures, x-ray, etc.), the hotline practitioner will work cooperatively with affiliated hospital to arrange this. If post-exposure prophylactic medication is necessary, the hotline practitioner will phone in a prescription to a pharmacy convenient for the student to expedite medication administration. The hotline practitioner and student will work with the hospital personnel to attain source patient blood for testing.

If you experience or witness mistreatment while you are rotating at Stanford clinical sites, we encourage you to report it through one of the options.

1.  Contact the Office of Medical Student Wellness (OMSW) directly by email. Only the OMSW members of the office will see this report. They will de-identify information about persons reported and present to the monthly Respectful Environment and Mistreatment Committee for review and action.

2.  Report incidents (including by patient) via MedHub (Stanford.medhub.com) or directly in Qualtrics. Students can report at the time of the incident and not wait for the end-of-course evaluations. OMSW receives the report. Egregious incidents are handled immediately. Qualtrics links: clerkship, and mistreatment by patient incidents.

3.  Complete a SAFE report through the hospital SAFE reporting system. Reports referencing student mistreatment are sent directly to OMSW. They are kept confidential and addressed quickly.

4.  Report incidents to course directors and/or the Assistant Dean for Clerkship Education.
